  • Argo Magnum 8x8 Year? Problems with the drivetain.....

    Hey Guys,

I just bought an argo magnum 8x8 im not sure on the year. Its has the kohler 17hp twin. The drive-train is a lil messed up when im turning i feel it binding up on the driver side (right Side). It is a double chain system. Where is a good place to get some chain by the foot? I do notice on the left side it needs some tensioners and a few new sprockets. I picked this up as a project and hoping to get it done in a few months well and least driving. Also it will need tires soon any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Derek

Sounds as if you have an 8 I/C model, should have a serial number starting with nk. for the drivetrain noise you may want to unbolt the firewall and run the machine around listening and watching for the noise, probably the trans chain adjustment or the idler shaft bearings.

Where is the serial number located? I was thinking about taking the upper body off. Ill try the firewall
I'm new to Argos I've worked on motorcycles but nothing like this. Thanks for the reply!

The serial number should still be on the firewall on an I/C,it's a small tag, there are four 1/4" bolts that hold the firewall in place and hopefully you have the short sticks, there should also be a brake cooling hose needing disconnection.
Once the firewall is out you can check for excessive slop in the front 4 chains ( the trans chains are adjustable) and by prying up and down on the idler shaft bearings, check for wore bearings. You can also look at your brake pads and various other parts unseen when the firewall is in.

Yep, project, I/C, serial tag looks to be over key switch. Looks as if it had a windshield, winch, out board kit and convertible top at one time, least it still has the skid plate.

If it's like mine ( it's the same model ) the skid plate is only at the front. It also appears to have the dreaded droop the same as the one I have, check out my thread on how I cured it.

At a guess it's about an 85 ish model, yes ??

Yeah, I know you want pics of the I/C Is it just the drivetrain or is there something you want pics of to check against yours. I ask because it's on the trailer ready to go out Saturday so I have to climb about to get pics .
I asume a side view is to compare if yours has drooped (the Argo that is)

Mine's still an ongoing project. It was rough when I bought it but it's getting there slowly. It was covered in snot green paint as it was used as the basis for a sea monster in some kids tv program. I have got all the paint off the top of the tub but still have some to remove on the bottom.

I like it because it saves me walking with bags of corn for the bird feeders (pheasant) but I have to admit, it's loads of fun. I used to use a quad but thought that at my age I need something I sit in not on, it's hard to fall off an Argo
