Best way to clean out the engine compartment and tub?

So... I just bought a 2000 conquest. It is absolutely filthy inside. The engine has dirt, mud, oil, sludge all over it and there is all sorts of gunk in the bottom of the tub.

My first thought was to degrease and pressure wash it all out draining through the back plugs. Then I thought about the chains.... don't really want to degrease those.

Any tips or thoughts for a newbie?

Sounds like you're on the right tract, if you don't wish to do the chains you could remove them, it'll be good training. Once the chains are off it's easy to check all the bearings and check the chain slide blocks, be sure to check the idler/jack shaft bearings. A stiff brush and some Bleech-White will help with any goo in the body and give it some luster.

I've used a steamer, works great on removing gunk/Grease from engine and trans, but have to be carefull how hot you let it get. Also works great on inner tub, but again, watch the heat.

hi,
if the engine is that dirty I would pull the engine, remove the cooling air intake cover and remove flywheel .
This will allow u to clean all the cooling fins . Remember it is very easy to wash debris either into starter motor or wedge a small rock in the stator .
