Argo trans kinda Noisy,,

Hey all,,we did pretty well today,,I found all 10 bearings and 2 seals for the Argo trans today at a rather local shop that has a magnificent bearing selection,for about $200,,,,and we have all but 2 of them installed in the trans.! I contacted William T. Barnes Argo, in Cambridge MD. and talked to Donna in parts,,,ordered output shaft (under $48), 1-seal, plugplate, revers bushing and 2 shims.all for under $85 with shipping,,,,I was pleasently surprised on the shaft price! If all parts get here by the end of week..the BigFoot will be back in action by sunday,,if all goes right. Later,,,Mark

Bilge pump.. I have one similar to your bilge pump. It's mounted in the chain well behind the front axle. It's clamped to the frame cross member behind the front axle(the member your pump is sitting up against now) The bilge outlet points to the rear and goes under the member, then is plumbed upward in pvc.

I bought a similar bilge pump, I don't know how or where to mount it yet. Yours sounds like it turned out nice. Could you post a picture of exactly where and how your bilge pump is mounted. Thanks

Argo part #34-98

How is the seating on the out side of the bearing? It is unusual to see the hardened shaft worn like that and not the soft cast aluminum around the out side but I am only going by the outboard motors I have serviced.

you may want to add some retaining compound between the bearing an shaft
Loctite makes some I am not sure if it is 609, 638, 640 or 648 but Loctite has a technical support line you can call

other brands may have retaining compound too but I am not sure on the performance.



I find it is good to take pictures or even video dissembling and rebuilds even for ones own reference in case you second guess your self when putting it back together.

Yes Robio,,,On any of the bearings that went on or in,,to easy,, they were removed,, cleaned of any oil,, and retaining compound was used to lock it in place ! We did'nt have the camera today.

Update,,Well the shaft I got from Argo was the wrong shaft ! The output shaft that fits my BigFoot, has 6 spline on one end, 2 -1/4" keyways on the other end,,,the shaft Argo sent me had 6 spline on both ends,(newer part) my parts manual is for a newer serial # Bigfoot !

So today my son brought the old shaft to Tech school he is in Machine,Tool, turned it down,,made a sleeve, to fit, with a tight interface heated it up,,slid it on,,,turned the shaft down to the proper size,,,here it is,, Before and after:

Not Bad for an 18 yr old! I thank you guys for the compliments, and am pretty proud of him too. He made 2 pins for the "Master of the Mechanical stuff" (lol, the guy helping rebuilding the Argo trans),one small pin from Komatsu,,,1"x 5/16,,he was billed $153.00,,,lol,,He said "Hey Cody can you make it",,,hr after school started,,he had 2 of them made for him(he only wanted one) and the teacher even graded him on it for school.,,,Mark

Ok,,well today we got to work on the BigFoot a little bit,,re-arranged where the Bilge pump is placed,,Put it right in the center under the engine,,as far forward as possible, I used Roger's Idea with the 2 hose clamps to mount it,,But we could not set it in the chain/axle well,,the pump would rub the chains no matter how we placed it.
After the pump was mounted,, we Floated the bottom half of the BigFoot in the pond to see if it leaked anywhere, not a drop from axles,,so pulled it out with my truck,,pushed it back in the garage,,and we atleast have the engine back in the tub,, heres a pic,,and couple showing my 3/8" pipe remote location oil drain. ,,,,,Mark

Lot's of work! That's what happens sometimes.

Bilge pics. Yes the pump has to be under a certain dia. and the outlet has to be low enough to go under the frame member. This pump is probably 5 years old, so can't give a current part #.

yep Roger,,we tried that very spot,,barely got it in ,and it was rubbing the chain,,plus the outlet was to high to go under the frame,,so we had a big hose clamp,,slid it under the big 4" round frame in the front, and one around the pump,,clamped them together,,lowest spot we could get.

OK,,Finally,,,Got the seals for the trans yesterday,,,over a weeks wait just for them,,was suppose to be only 2-3 days,,,2-1/2 hrs and we had the trans back together,,it is now in the BigFoot,,both Idler chains hooked up,,Brake/Steering handles back in place,,all bled out with new Dot 5 Brake fluid( man that old brake fluid was kinda nasty looking,,quite abit of moister in the bottom)tomorrow should see it all back together,,I hope,,,cant wait to be tooling around again,,,,,mark
