  • Conquest brake fan

I have added a nice led light to the front. Just ordered a few leds for the rear and to shine down in the bed area. I plan on wiring everything to rocker switches on the dash. I heard recently that the brake bower was an option. So I am wondering if, why I am wiring rockers anyway, I should put it on a rocker also. I am thinking it would be nice if I could turn it off when I am winching or running lights for an extended period. I have yet to have problems with the charging system. But the guy I bought the machine off of said he did. I am just thinking of problem avoidance. Any thoughts? good or bad? I would make the fan to be on when the key is on, but be able to turn it off when needed.

I'd be concerned I'd forget to switch it back on after winching... or (even though unlikely) bump it off and not notice.

Putting a switch in would be nice for heavy winching and extended idling times as there is a good draw to run the fan, the fan was standard on all Conquests. On our older machine the brake duct is out due to being melted when the fan seized up, during the last to 6x6world rides at Busco and Ashtabula my brakes were very hot even though the hose is still blowing across where it will.
If you have the alternator kit the switch really isn't needed but the stock charging system would benefit from it.

I'm wondering, if it was a factory option anyway. Would it matter? I know it's there for a reason. That's why I am hesitant about it.

So the fan wasn't an option? The alternator kit is kind of the high side. And from what I have read, its a bear to get in. If my gage is right the charging system is putting off around 14-16 volts at a high idle. And better under throttle. Still torn.

Putting out that much I'd bet you have an alternator kit, it is located under the radiator forward of the battery ( if there). With out the alt. kit at idle Conquests generally charge right at the 12 mark.
The switch wouldn't hurt as long as you remember to turn it on, a lighted switch would be best as the fan draws over 7 amps.

I just went for a short ride. At idle it is reading 13, not 14-16. At speed it is reading 14. Sorry for confusion. I'm sure if it has an alternator the guy I bought it off of would have said something. But I will check.

I put a switch on the brake fans for both my conquests. I believe it helps.
I wouldn't worry about forgetting it in the off position, I've done it lots, you can feel the brakes getting mushy and smell them before any damage happens. Although a "lighted switch" is a good idea if you think it's a big deal.

I think I'm going to do it. I have a been trying to get ahold of a place out of California that makes custom switches. If they ever get back with me that's the route I'm going to go.

mine came installed from previous owner and I like it when idling. Mine is tied to the voltmeter so a quick check there will tell if the switch is on or not.

I put a lighted LED switch on my dash. I shut it off when warming up the motor and while idling for long periods, winching etc.

                        Hey Trev
What do you mean? Tied to the Voltmeter.

I've got to ask ...................why a custom switch ?? Can't you just nip down the car spares shop and buy a switch?

I am going to have a total of 6 rocker switches when it's all said and done. I want to know what is what without having to go thru them all. I have switches on my truck, jeep and now my conquest. I don't wanna have to remember what they all do. So I'm going to have them all labeled, all pretty like. Then by the time I wear of the lettering I'll have them memorized. Besides I need a new winch switch.

I'm not sure RD, I didn't wire it and never traced it. I just know that when the switch controlling it is of the volt meter is dead and vice versa. It is also seperate from the ignition as I can turn the blower on with key in off position. It is also not wired direct to the battery. I will be pulling the motor soon to go bigger and adding the brake light kit which I hope can be modified into a low tech turn signal via the switches the laterals are pressed against. Anyway I will be looking at all the wiring then and will let you know if I find anything interesting.
