  • Alternator belt breaking

    Hello. I have a 2010 Avenger 8x8 750 HDI SE.
This machine is usually used on level ground with no challenging terrain. The last two times I took it “in the woods” the alternator belt broke. It seems too much of a coincidence. I’m not an aggressive driver. Could a stump push the bottom up to jam the pulley? Could the winch put too much strain on the alternator? Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas or suggestions on what might be causing this?

Actually.......... I've never even heard of an Alternator Belt breaking on an Argo. (I'm sure it can happen, I've just not come across it)
I am an aggressive driver at times, some might even say "Stupidly Aggressive" at times, lol. I've bumped, driven over, fallen off, or crashed into every stump and rock around here, and never popped an alt belt.
    Thoughts:
    Belt too tight
Something sharp coming in contact with belt (Guard, or Bracket)
    Pulley Misalignment
Plain old bad luck?? Bad belts??

I have 4,200lb winches on my machines, and have pulled with them untill they stall/trip breaker. I don't believe your winch is putting too much strain on Alternator.
To check your belly pan deflection, put a floorjack under the front of the machine, and jack it up, right under the Alt Pulley. Check for contact.

Let us know what you come up with.

Sounds like someone needs driving lessons or new glasses.....

I have had a couple of belts break. But What I was doing is buying just a cheep belt.

Now I have bought the best power rated belt I could find and have not lost a belt since.

          Update.
took the rad out so we could get a good look. Checked everything mentioned in previous post. Everything checked out ok. The new belt when installed looked a bit slack, so we tightened that up a little. The first time we replaced the belt we got a GATES from NAPA. $7.99. Made in Mexico. This time we got one from the Argo dealer. $17.99, Made in Mexico
I guess time will tell. Old Tucker, What was the belt you bought?

That little belt isn't very popular I purchased one last year off the shelf that wouldn't bend with out cracking. Any new belt should run a 40 amp alternator if it hasent been around for years already. Sounds like your first replacement belt was probably just defective. Hope you don't have any more failures they arnt that fun to install.

Funny, just came on to ask about mine. Alt stopped charging and after looking around, found a frayed loose belt. Could someone tell me size/ length of replacement? 2012 hdi, prob the same, 40 amp alt

              Further searching looks like 3/8-19
