  • Air cooled vs liquid cooled

What are the pros and cons of having a air cooled machine vs a liquid cooled machine ?

  • #2
The water cooled engine is usually more quite, lasts longer, and if you put a heater in, you are set for year round riding anywhere. They do well in the cold as well as extreme heat. I've got one liquid cooled machine and several air cooled. Both are great in certain applications. When it gets really hot, I only drive the liquid cooled machine because the air cooled engines run pretty hot and retain the heat in the engine bay. As the air cooled engines get hot they lose power. The down side of water cooling is that its just another thing to fail. If it fails out in the swamp, it will have to be towed in, air cooled engines can cool down, then cranked again.
If you look at atvs in general, most have gone to liquid cooling.

Liquid cooled most definitely, only downside is you gotta look things over check fan belts, bearings, hose chaff, etc, greatest thing is water cooled but a leak can make it a bad day,on the side of air cooled ultra dependable, hard on coils and what not in the heat, little to no maintenance,in cooler climates good to go ,in extremes not so,super cold liquid you can add a block heater,in hot hot the rad makes a huge difference, simple as that.NCT

Good points by all, water cooled engines generally do not have a recoil starter so a good charging system/battery are needed.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.
