  • food for thought for new hdi

I currently run a 2010 hdi with rubber tracks.this past fall I removed the tracks so I could run it to check its performance on dry ground. the argo ran 21mph at 3550 rpm which is right on spec for argos prediction. The belt on the drive clutch only ran about 1/2 to5/8'' from the top of sheeve which is no where near full shift .Reinstalled tracks and ran 17mph with same rpm and3/4 from top of sheeve .I have ran sleds all of my life and am extremely particular with my clutching(clean , offset , belt length, engine max rpm, and full shift). So in my opinion ,with the engine running proper rpm and, clutches back shifting properly( same engine RPM under load with tracks)the lower geared 8.4 should work fabulous . It should run similar speeds , maybe more, while using m0re of the clutches which increases efficiency..

Yes, I think it works fabulous too! You have more low end torque, at a higher rpm,at a lower speed, but when you open it up,I get the same top end speed, aprox. 15-18 mph with the pro series tracks. Somebody did their homework,as the lower gearing fits the size and weight of the HDI and truely optimizes preformance. The 8.4 granny gear is even more impressive navigating thru tight turns between trees, and also works wonders going thru 3' hummocks and stump fields.
Still scratching my head as to why ODG can do such a great job with this tranny, but still can't make a shifting boot that stays in place! LOL.
