    Is it worth it?

    Hi all,

    Its been a while since I've been on so I figured its time. Here we go.

    I have a 97 Conquest that I stripped down to to give it a complete rebuild. I got as far as the strip down part but than something happened.....Life.... so it got put on the back burner. I sent the Kawasaki motor out to a small local guy who ( if you can believe this) had a stroke and died. His family sold off the business and my motor disappeared. My question is do you think this Conquest is worth a complete rebuild knowing it needs all new bearings a motor and probably new tires. The tubs are great and it has the ROPS also. I have been thinking about an Avenger or a newer 750hdi with the 31 HP in it. If I go new I will save my ROPS and install it on the newer model. As long as it will fit. ( I do have a welder). I would than part out the Conquest. Ive been looking in the range of 15k ish for something newer. maybe a tad bit more.

    What kind of use are you going to put it through. Because if you are going to use it hard and with tracks . You should go with HD axles and bearing. Because the last thing you want is a brake down. I would rather be driving it instead of fixing it. The conquest is the work horse of the argos. They are built tough. but again you will be putting a big $ into it to do it. Yes you can go cheep and get it running again. But cheep is not alway the best way to go. Again I would rather be driving it instead of fixing it. A new one is a big $ to But at least its new.
    The money I put into my conquest. I may of been better off with a new one. But then again the new ones are not built a tough as the old ones. The tubs are lighter the same with ever thing else. Its just like a car, the new cars will fall apart just by looking at them the wrong way.
    Again how much are you going to use it and what are you using it for. A lot of argos are just like a boat. they buy them and then loose interest in them.

      Well I live in New England and everything I drive through or over would probably make most guys cry. Rocks razor blade sharp pieces of steel.. nuclear fallout.... u get the point.... I really want the toughest I can possibly have. Even if I just take it down nice groomed fire trails =). I guess my point is sometimes I can be pretty ridiculous with it. I just want it to be dependable and tuff. Are the Conquest tubs more rugged than the 750 hid 's?

        The body looks like its in good shape. You could put 10 to 15 grand into it and you will have one very tough conquest. You take that same money and buy something newer. You will end up with something newer all right but no way as tough. Chances are it will not have HD axles or bearings. It will be just a off the flour model. That someone else has beat up. If you buy new then you are looking at even more $ to get a good HD unit. There is the odd time you can come across a good used argo that has not been all beat up. But thats like finding a needle in a hay stack. Nine times out of ten you will have to put a lot of money into it. If your body is good and the frame is good. And you do not mind doing the work yourself then go for it. As for the tub I do believe they are one of the most rugged out there.
        As for the HP there are a couple of folks out there that have dropped in a bigger motor and its worked out quite well for them.

        This is what I did with mine and I started with a pretty beet up unit. I had to replace all bearings axles chains. I could go on but what the heck

          I really like the Conquest model, if fact I like my Conquest better than the 2006 Avenger I had before. It had a lot of issues, but I am sure most Avengers are great machines as Argo just makes great aatvs that are built very well.

          I would cost out what it would cost to put in HD axles and bearings, chains, and a 27 HP Kawai motor And some 22 or 24" Argo tires or look at track options. I bet you would be around 5k for new axles, bearings, motor, and tires. Maybe 8k if you slap some Chanel tracks on it. Maybe a bit more depending on how much or the work you are doing. But you can have a kick a$$ Conquest for sure.

          You may have to factor in a clutch rebuild and tranny depending on how they are.

            I have been meaning to ask what those blue "dealy bobbers" were on that back of your blue bomber were. Very cool way to carry snowshoes indeed. I am always carrying a couple of pairs of snowshoes. Are you the welder?

              I have gone both ways ...rebuilding is ok but how many hundreds of hour will you spend start to finish..remember time is money...and when done you still have an older machine...if your a collector it another story...but I am pretty sure if i had a choice between a rebuilt conquest or a brand new hdi ...I would choose the new upgraded machine...believe me everyone wants the hdi model...rebuilding this one may put you funds further away for a new hdi someday.......jmo

                Engine $1650, tires and wheels $850, bearing chains $500, $1000 for everything else. $4000 total if you buy right, do some research an work.. And you will have a good machine. You don't have to trick it out with overpriced factory parts.
