  • tranny F'ed

went out today for a ride and while heading down a tail I got off in to the powder and not realising I had sheared some pins long story short my tranny is now f'ed no forward or reverse gears secondary clutch spins but not the drivers not sure if it is the selector or sheared something off internally so it is sitting out in the bush waiting for repair or rescue.

next question what is the best way to drag that boat home I assume with another argo andbody have any ideas might have to wait till spring and go camping for a couple days to get it done lol

Add to description of what happened and perhaps we could give some tips for trail repair, what machine model is it.
such as did you get stuck then shift then nothing, or were you moving and then no drive? Any noises?

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Look right at the input shaft behind driven clutch and watch to see if input shaft is actually turning with the clutch. I've had the clutch key fall out when the spacer in the clutch is left out or mount bolt falls out. If the input turns with no drive forward or reverse I think it has to come out. In snow they are easier to tow on a sled. Not easy to get them on a sled but can be done. Two long kid sleds one under each side works ok for short distance. Good luck hope you didn't have to walk far.

Sheared keys in the drive discs act similar also.

Yep forgot the older ones are keyed. Quick check for a failure there is the mount bolt holding the disc usually turns in gear while the disc doesn't. Also keys on main drive gear internally on older ones was upgraded to spline in 95??

thanks guys fpr the info I managed to get it home with the help of another member Bart Oosterbaan towing me, great guy.

when running the selector moves back and forth and can fee3l it engaging as well as the occasional grinding into gear but when throttled up the output shafts will not turn, one side will turn slightly maybe couple mm but that is it even if engaging either side brake.

now I will just have too pull it out and pull it apart to see what the internals are looking like may be best to just rebuild the whole dam thing while I have it out!

any body know good places to get the parts to rebuild it numbers on top of tranny read 9779 CHK any info would be greatly welcomed

That's an oldie. Pull the mount bolts out of the output sprockets and run it or just pull the belt and drive by hand. In gear watch to see if one shaft turns inside the sprocket. Turning it by hand you will be able to feel if it even engages in gears. Follow the Argo manual for tear down and assembly. Not doing so can damage more parts or the case. Transmission manual is in Argo manuals on this site.

well finally got some time to pull it all apart and everything looks good except thaast the left side output shaft has been sheared right off in side the case but all the bearings and gears appear in great shape.. while taking apart did notice that my drive sprockets on the brake discs one has 2 cracks in it from one side th the other and the other one has teeth missing one side of the double sprocket should be able to take them to a machine shop and get new sprockets put back on the rotors.

well got all the parts ordered and should be here end of the week and should be up an going by end of next week!! while I have it in the garage started to look at wheel bearings and replacing all wheel bearings and chains only 5 of 8 need to be replaced but for piece of mind and so I can what engine hours Vs bearing wear as it is my first machine and not sure where it has been or how it was maintained, So should be ready for a good ice fishing trip for monster pike this spring last ice and for guiding bear hunters for some big Canadian bruins!!!!
