  • 31 hp avenger motor bogging out.

I bought a used low mileage argo (2011 avenger) this winter. Its on tracks. I made a couple of half hour trial runs in deep snow. No problems other that its really slow.
I am on my second tank of fuel. I put in de-icer yesterday. Today I took my wife for a ride., Lots of snow now getting sticky as its just above freezing today. About half hour int the ride the motor started to bog out but not completely stall. The argo basically almost comes to a stop and then the motor starts to rev up again. I turned around and headed for the highway and headed home down the pavement. It went up to about 15 mph and didn't bog quite as bad but still did.
Sounds like fuel issues to me. Anyone else have this trouble. I will take it to a dealer soon unless I can get help here.
    Thanks for any help.

I suspect the filter in the fuel tank. Drill out the rivits in seat box carefully and remove it. Remove fuel line and pull drop tube to clean the screen. Iv had to install filters on several between the tank and pump along with removing the strainer screen. The high pressure pump has a screen internally so don't run without a filter of some type before the pump. Wen reinstalling drop tube put grommet on tube part way then into tank. Lube the tube with WD40 and just push back in. One operated one with a fuel pressure gauge installed and hard throttle would loose pressure an run poor. A drop of 5 lbs will cause rough idle and low power. The screen was plugged. Good luck

Thanks. I'll try that in the next few days.

Take a look at the plugs too.. I had a broken lead on one and had roughly the same symptoms.. Might have a one or a bad coil lead...

You probably have the low gear transmission thats why it seems slow...check on top of the transmission for numbers like 6.4 or 8.4....you must always be careful if you power wash your ride..there is a small fuel vent on the outside rear ...its white in color.....if you spray water in this vent you will get water in the fuel which will also cause sputtering... I use a small rubber plug I bought at the hardware store when washing .

            Thanks, I'll remember that.
I dropped my machine off at the dealer to let him sort out why it bogs out after 20 minutes.

Just got word from Argo dealer about bogging out problem. They said that the fuel pump was making a noise. On top of that they changed the tank pick-up screen. (it was gummed up). They went for a test drive and the same thing happened.
They decided to remove and clean the tank. All kinds of " gunk" . Clean tank and fuel and no more bogging out. The fuel pump is now quiet also. Will pick it up later this week for test ride. My truck is now in the shop.
              Tranny problems.
              Stuff just never ends !

I has similar issues with my hdi

I removed, cleaned and flushed tank and cleaned pump pick up strainer and it seems to have done the trick.

                Runs like a dream now.

Picked up the avenger from the dealer. He showed me pictures of the crap in the tank. Also the pick up tube. It was almost completely blocked off inside. Kind of like clogged arteries. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. This was dried out "whatever" that got past the pick up screen in liquid form and solidified on the inside of the pick up tube. Everything was replaced and is working great. Even the fuel pump quieted down.
I'm happy now with the fuel problem fixed. BUT !!!!
I wanted to test the avenger (on tracks) in water. I drove right into the lake at the cottage. Almost a big mistake. Momentum kept me going for about 30 feet. I could't turn or back up. It took me about 5 minutes to eventually work my way back to shore. Any wind at all would be a disaster without an outboard motor. I had been watching you tube videos previously and it appeared that tracks worked somewhat but not nearly as good as just tires. I was disappointed to say the least. It was a steep learning curve but at least now I know its limitations.

Obviously, the speed that you will move forward in water depends on the type of tracks that you have but a lot of tracks only move in the water at very low throttle. Try just giving it 1/4 throttle or less if there is a next time. I'm glad to hear you got running again.
