help with argo pulling to the right

hi all, my early 80s 8x8 is steering to the right, i have checked the brakes dont bind, the chassis is not bent, tyres and tyre pressure are all good, im dreading the thought but could this be a transmission problem? any advice to get me back on the straight and narrow would be very much appreciated, paul.

hi Roger S, pretty sure its not tyres as i had the same problem on the old set of tyres, which i have just replaced, thanks anyways.

Has this just started happening? Is it just pulling a little?
Are you sure that it's not just the "Nature of the beast"? I notice a difference, just by where I sit on the seat, normaly I have someone with me, and even when I don't I tend to site more to the right than I should. Makes no differance when on a trail, as you have to steer quite a bit anyway. But, when trying to run a straight line, I have to shift over toward the center of the seat to keep on line.

Hows about maybe an axle Bearing starting to seize up ? Have you jacked it up and tried spinning the wheels, by hand,,rights side compared to left side,,chains well lubed and not binding.

Have you drained the trans gearlube,,,and checked the drain plug (if it has a magnet) for the fuzzy's ?

I just did the re-build on my trans ,,,mine was Growling though,,instead of the ARGO whine,,how's yours sound ? mine really growled if in neutral and reved the motor(to test it),,it did not pull to one side or the other though !,,,,Mark

hi rock doctor. when i first purchased this old argo about two years ago it was pulling to the right, the chassis was rotten and twisted so i put it down to that. however in the last few mon ths iv been restoring it which included a brand new machine built chassis. new bearings, flanges ,chains etc. put it all back togeather and its still pulling rightwards. id say that if i go forward 20 yards il be at least 5 yards over to the right.

hi m350, yeah i remember reading your trans rebuild, mines a bit growly in reverse and whiney goin forwards but quiet when in neutral! im wondering if the diff in the trans could be the prob but thats something i have no idea about.

Growls in Reverse could be the reverse gear bushing,,I replaced mine while in there,,,Hmmm maybe jack it up,,all wheels in the air,,take out the firewall and floor pans, so you can see the trans chains spinning,,put it in gear and slowly rev it up,,,maybe being able to watch the the idler chains from the trans,,see if they both spin the same speed,,,turning the axles !

There are 6 bearings (2 smaller,,inside it,,and 2 bigger ones for each output shaft)for the Diff,,if one side is getting bad,,it may make it pull to the side,,?

funny you should say that cos bout a week ago before i put the wheels on (waiting on tyres) i ran the argo up in gear to check that all chains were aligned and noticed the left side was turning but the right side cut in every now and then, i put this down to the diff having no strain to make it work,do you think i may have a problem with it?

Was talking to the "Master of the Mechanical stuff"(lol,, my main man on the trans rebuild),,the trans diff spins as one unit see pic: until you apply braking to one side or the other,,,If you already spun it up,, and the right was not spinning the same as the left,,you might have a problem with the right sides,,chains,,Axle Bearing,,chain tensioners,,something binding them,,??

When Jacked up,,have you spun the wheels by Hand ? Feeling if resistance is the same on both sides ?

Sounds to me like something is Binding up the right side.

thanks m350 il give that a try. i was chatting to an argo mechanic who tells me that these early argos had a tendency to turn to the right, so maybe after all its the nature of the beast

aaagh! still pullin to the right!!!

Its driving me crazy, i was riding around in the argo today in the snow, and after about ten minutes its started pulling to the right again. I have replaced all bearings, chains. tyres, brake pads and countless other bits an bobs including chassis! Does this sound like a tranny problem?

Your brakes might need an adjustment.

Hey Gibba,

I hate it when that happens! I encounter the same problem time to time. Check your tire pressure and brake adjustment. Just when you think you got those brakes adjusted correctly she starts pulling to one side again. Took mine out Saturday had the same problem and I loosened the brakes a hair on the side it was pulling to and it seemed to help. But all of these machines have thier own little quirks. I would hope it is not quirks with tranny issues. Good luck to ya.

do all of the tires have the same tire pressure and hold the same pressure after 10 min?
