  • Quick video of the super Argo stalking a moose

Sorry for the crappy quality guys. I do have a better camera.... I just don't know anyone with chest waders to hold it! I'm simply more impressed every time I take the Argo out for a run. The moose and swamp are rapidly becoming a way of life..... I still need to get the track tuners installed

That's cool seeing a moose that close. Here in N.E.Ohio it's whitetail deer in the back (and front) yards. And the dogs play with them too!

Nice! Our moose are kind of aggressive. I would not normally feel that comfortable that close to a moose, but with the steel cage on the Argo and 55 hp on tap I feel confident in being able to deter the moose.

Nice video, must be good to be that close. The dog knows when to back off, got some sense methinks.

What calibre would you use on one of those and would it be an engine room shot (heart / lungs) or head shot?

Nice vid. That moose seems kinda tame.

rodp....That moose is close enough to shot with a bow. Nice heart and lung shot.
Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

That's a big no no over here. Not allowed to hunt with bow or crossbow. They stipulate the calibre of rifle required for everything above sub 12lb ft air.

Here in Newfoundland you can hunt pretty much with anything with a few exceptions. Do not make sense but you cannot hunt with a crossbow...compound or recurve is not a problem if you have over 20lbs draw for small game and over 40lbs draw weight for big game. Coyotes have to be hunted with a 200 calibre centre fire weapon unless you have a license for another speices and that season is open. I can use my 22 rim fire to hunt rabbits and coyote when the rabbit season is open but when the rabbit season closes I am no longer to use that gun....go figure.

Over here I can use my .22 rimfire and air (firearms or non firearms air) for small vermin, rabbits, squirrels and birds that are on the list. .22 rimfire is not allowed on fox, for that the minimum calibre is .17 HMR, same with Muntjac and Chinese water deer. Anything bigger is really .243 to be able to use it anywhere.

Just put in for .17hmr and .243 as we have to have a permission with adequate backstops for the calibre. Although I have probably over 800 acres to shoot on it's as flat as a pancake and there's no way they would give anything above .22 rimmie, however, just got 200 acres that's like a small version of the Welsh valleys so should be ok now.

Hi rodp. That moose is in my front yard. There have been 2 bulls hanging around. The zone my house and the moose are standing in is archery only.... My 42$ hunting license allows me to kill a bull on that exact spot during a general season. It is also viable state wide (think lower 48 continual USA, all lands west of the missipi river) for caribou, brown and black bear, sheep moose elk and deer...... I can hunt caribou on the dalton year around....

As far as caliber I shoot the good old 30-06 lethal in the lungs out to 400 yards with tipped tsx blurts made by barns....magnums take too much meat away! My daughters will either shoot reduce hand loads or a .243.

                      Spookum,

That pics sure looks interesting. Looks like you had a very good hunt. Now the fun is over and the work begins. I cut up all my own meat. I debone everything. Do not put a bone in my freezer. My belief is that you cannot eat bone so why freeze them to take up space in your freezer.

It took two days to cut up the moose, just me and the hunting partner.... But ms. Spookum did help bag after work.

I LOVE THE MOOSE BONES. When we are cutting we throw the feamer and any other big bone we can get our hand on directly into the wood stove, and let sit for 10 min on/in/near a roding fire. When it comes out, it smells like burnt hair YUCK. However, when taken outside and allowed to cool the marrow is the BEST PART INT HE WORLD. Spread on pilot bread or ritz crackers is best for sure!

We also save the knee joints front and rear with 6"-8" of bone. They are super yummy in soups and the ribs we try to keep attached to the rib meat.... Makes for nice BBQ. Like my grandpa said, we use everything but the oink in a pig.... So I try to use everything but the "wah". Shoulder blades make good calling "sticks" when beat on brush and trees makes the bulls to nuts if they are in the rut.

I guess that one would ask how the heck a person can cut up 600# of meat (freezer weight) in just 24 man hours. Moose cutting is diffrent than what I have grown up with you "chunk" big muscle groups and steak or cube later out of roast size. We also grind 30% of the animal..... Burger is too fast and easy to pass up. Add 15% beef suet and everyone one seems to get along with it!

Oh, and a work sharp knife sharpener, pre made bags, and a cabellas vacume bagger with a 60 second cycle time does help too!

Two days sounds a lot of time but when you think it's a trade off for a quarter of a ton of meat it's worth it, can't be bad.
