  • Avenger battery and needed accessories

Great site.. chock full of realtime info. I don't ask many questions but here is an idea i am working on. Did not want to carry a spare battery so i went ahead and removed the stock battery from my 2007 avenger efi and noticed that a full size yellow Optima D34/deep cycle /starting 750cca/120min reserve battery will slide in perfectly and the battery cover goes right back in place...Should make winching effortless too...also noticed that the stock strap that holds the battery down was cheesy at best so now i use a 1" rafting cam strap and that works great. My thought was to run a cable to the back and install a plug for the trolling motor near the motor mount. This way i can charge my troling battery when i ride. I usually ride and camp in for no less than 3 days at a time and always fear my battery going dead so in place of the spare battery i bought a Yamaha 1000 watt generator to recharge the battery in the event i leave something on or maybe a small short somewhere. If my starter and engine hold up i should be in good shape. Other things i've added include a perimeter alarm with pager, Horn, Tachometer/hour meter, bilge pump indicator light, battery discharge indicator light, spare brake cable, spare throttle cable, brake fan shutoff switch and indicator light, moved throttle ajustment knob forward for easy access, installed seat hinges, installed rear floor holdown knob [no more bouncing floor], handle bar mounted garmin gps 60csx, and intake door from Shocky model. All these thing really improved the ability to read my Argo..getting back home is the name of the game...Right! Now my question is...Will my altenator be able to charge the larger battery??

Nice setup! I have the series 32 Optima yellow top! Tough battery, and I have the same setup for my trolling motor. You would have no true worries when out in the avenger. If I remember correctly the engine still has a pull start! The motor is self supportive, and does not need the battery to operate. It's only needed for accessories, fan, lights, ect... I had an incident where the starter solenoid died in a bad location. I thought it was the starter itself, and disconnected my battery to be safe from a hung starter. I didnt do much riding around on it, but the bit I did had no ill effect.

        Pull start

No pull start on the 06 or 07 Avenger.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

            Avenger-battery -trolling motor etc.

[QUOTE=tracmaster;16629]Hey GREASEMONKEY what type of connector did you mount to your argo for the trolling motor.

Tracmaster I have a 2007 Avenger efi. If a winch with the motor off or idling to slowly I can kill the engine. I am pretty sure that the 2008 Kohler 31 efi has (Maybe an option) alarger capacity alternator. I looked it up on the Kohler site and it looks more like a wiring harness than anything else but as of yet I have not pursued the matter. More juice would be cool though!

philipatmaxfour... drop a Optima D34 750 cca / 124 reserve minutes deep cycle [ yellow top ] in your standard battery compartment... that doubles your battery power.. and install a brake fan cut-off switch and wire a indicator light that stays on when the fan is off...This way you won't forget to tun the fan back on. ..brake fan uses almost 10 amps of the 25 argo supplies...you don't need the fan when standing still...and you will have no more problems winching.. mine never stalls i also set my idle at 1000 rpm's when warm and never have any grinding when i shift gears. ..i can send a picture if you need...hope this helps alittle.

                Avenger battery

I have done the brake fan switch recently- I am procrastinaying about the battery. The optima yellow top would double my battery power but CJ Ate says a dry cell is best and I think he may be on to something. Still I procrastinate!

Phill does yours have the alternator kit? Also do you have the factory winch kit and winch. Do you know the cost of the winch kit

                    Alternator kit for avenger efi

Hi Kovak-No I don't have the alternator kit. I only heard about it through you. I tried to look it up on the Kohler website but I didn't really learn much. It looked very simple and compact. If this kit causes the engine to put out more amps at idle that would be better for me than a bigger battery! The older Argos like the Conquest could be equipped with an optional altrnator (looked like it came from a car) that was driven by another belt, but I would not want the extra complexity.
About the winch kit--My 2007 Canadian Price list shows part no.622-80 winch kit(Avenger EFI) retail price $935.57
It also shows a Rear receiver winch kit Avenger EFI part no. 622-96-price$144.68 and part no.623-60Remote control kit-winch (Frontier /Avenger) $192.90I assume the 2008 price is not cheaper? )
I bought the rest but I made my own rear receiver winch mount because I wanted to mount the winch higher up out of the muck.

I started off using a trolling motor quick connect, but it gets hot after using it for 15+ minutes. I went to NAPA auto parts, and dug through the electrical book, and found a set of 8ga golf cart charging plugs!

                        couple questions

                        Tracmaster,
what kind of tachometer did you get?? How much?? I have an 07 Frontier 6x6 and it came with an hour meter but wouldn't mind getting a tach. Also, what's the Shockey intake door and what does it do?? AND what the heck is a perimeter alarm with pager and WHAT is that used for?? Sorry, I'm new to the Argo game. Just bought this thing beginning of May, I've been driving Yamaha ATV's the last 10 yrs. My ATV riding buddy just bought an 08 Avenger 750 EFI. Man that's a BIG machine compared to my little 6x6 but I'm happy with mine.
Anyway, how is your Avenger running, did you figure out if the alternator keeps your Optima charged up??

                        Thanks in advance,
                        Dennis

where did you get an Argo price list from?? I can't find one online. I'd like to get one if I could. I just purchased a new Frontier 6x6 (07) and would like to at least know the costs of some of these Argo parts.

Dennis, I got the price list from the Argo dealer. Maybe I could get over there next week and get a 2008 issue buy I,m not sure how to send it to you? Jim Shokey the hunting guide has a special model Black Avenger named after him. Among other things it has a little hinged door in the intake screen--for??. Too bad it isn't in the hot air exit screen, We could try cooking while we drive. Apparently such meals are called M.R.E.s

Dennis ..i use a Tiny Tack hour and tach unit..just search goggle..works great and only starts when motor is running... the door on the shockey model is nice because you can clean out the intake and store things there like a tool kit or tire repair kit...Perimeter alarlm is a system whereas if someone starts fuc#ing with my machine i will know it up to 4 miles away..but i mostly use it if i stay at a motel and my ride is on a trailer...i mounted the tack under the hood and moved the throttle ajustment knob to a more accessable place..i also set my idle to 1000 rpm's and the tranny never grinds when i shift gears...when i get more time i will post pictures of small things i did to inprove looks and functionality.
