  • Argo axles etc

I'm currently repairing an HDI 750 for a mining company. The front right axle is twisted/sheared off, as well as some other problems. I am wondering what would cause the axle to do that? It must have taken quite the force to do that. Is there any particular things that cause axles to break, tracks, bad bearings, etc? I have a 2003 6x6 bigfoot with channel tracks and would like some advise on avoiding this happening to me. I don't have a whole lot of experience driving argos. Thanks.

Was the 750 hdi running with tracks? what type of terrain? what type of tracks , plastic, rubber etc. what year is the hdi and was proper maintence done?
Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

I'll bet rubber tracks in rough terrain with track tuners.
What I've found is all most all the give in the hdi's is gone especially with the rubber tracks, the power to the ground has to go somewhere with no slip and torque is twisting the axles. Had 4 do the same last/this year on customers machines and caught one that the splines were twisted on, all fronts.
You'll probably have to cut axle near the end of the spline to reuse the sprocket as the splines will splay. Check that the outer bearing flange didn't crack.

The argo is 2010, they say some maintenance was done but doutful, with 18" rubber tracks, rocky, swamp terrain, not surprising at the abuse, it is normal for this situation. Just normal abuse I guess.

Did you check the track tension?
Bet it looks a lot like this.

Jim, yes it looks exactly like that. The tracks were in the back of it when it came to me so dont know how the tension is. Is axles breaking more common on 8x8 than 6x6, or just how they are driven?
