  • Windshield questions???????

Why a windshield? Other then breaking the wind, what's the purpose if you don't have a top to go with it, also don't they add a lot of weight to the front end of the Argo?? I've been driving ATV's for 10 years and never even cared or even thought of a windshield. I would think the windshield's weight would make it undesirable on an Argo much less the cost. How much are they and where do you get them anyway?? I would like to get a top someday for my Frontier but was just wondering if you don't have a top is it worth the $$ and the extra weight to get a windshield??

Thanks, not being critical, just trying to justify getting one.

The windshield blocks branches and briers. Just duck in close to it while going through the brush. Sure beats thorns in the face

They also make a ride in the winter months more bearable even without a top.

I don't like 'em but don't sit up front like a max does. They do break the cold air in winter, even w/o a top. I've been thinking about some kind of a covered wagon style/tent pole hoop cover, that would flex and give way if caught on branches, etc. A common idea is a roll bar and windshield, and a home made top stretched over them and maybe back farther. I like to go toppless and barless myself. Except when it rains I miss having something.

To windshield or not to windshield

The windshield for my 2006 Avenger was around $700. I do not use it all the time but is handy when riding behind someone. Knocks the dust off. In the winter it breaks the wind and the machine will help keep you somewhat warm. Weight doesn't really come into the picture unless your trying for airbud shots.(mine is a 8 wheeler, will need a CH-46 for a airbud shot) Some like them and some don't, i like mine. The factory unit has safety glass installed in it just like a car. I would like to have a soft cover for my unit but from what i am told they are around $1500 unless there is a place that sells them cheaper. Al prices are Factory quotes. The windshield price i quoted was what i paid Nov 2007. ODG has had some price increases since then . A windshield is something that you do not want delivered, the shippers almost always break them in shipment. A dealer will generally pick them up at a distributor to ensure they make it in one piece. I have helped pick them up before. Another tip about the windshield. Never transport your unit without extra strapping to hold down the windshield. The factory hold down straps are ok for trail riding, but sometimes will allow it to flip up while traveling down the road. Not a good thing. Destroying a $700-800 windshield plus the damage to the top of the machine is not my ideal of a fun trip. Hope this helps you in your decision making process.

                      Good investment

Bearclaw, up here you are going to want the windshield and the top for it. It is pricey. The windshield is about $500 and the top is $1500 locally, but well worth the investment in both the winter and the rainy season (thats over 3/4's of the year up here) it will keep you warm and dry! Dont bother with the heater though. I have met two people up here that have it and said it is not necessary even in our temps! As for the weight, you wont notice it much unless you go with a full hard top like mine!
It's not a matter of life or death. It's much more important than that!

                        THANKS!!!

                        Lewis, Cory,
Thanks for the good info about windshields. I'm a year or so away from any kind of option installs on my Frontier, other then a transom, unless I sell some of my firearms which I'm in the process. I'm still reeling from the sticker shock loan I just got. These things aren't cheap but they're worth it IMHO. Eventually tho, I'd like to get a windshield, soft top and tracks. That's a loan in itself.

PS: Lewis, I understand about freedom. My Dad passed away in 94. He was a good guy always on the front lines under Patton and someone to be trusted in a foxhole. Was wounded in Sept of 44 in southern France. The stories he told me, mesmerizing!! Semper Fi too, my son is a former Marine.
