Noisy 6x6 Argos

Hello,
I purchest a older Argo 6x6, ser#t3737.
It has a Tecumseh 16 hp.
I need to know if anyone knows of a way to quiet it down?
It is way to loud for hunting.
Also if there is any other motors to switch it out with, that might be quieter?

On most Newer model Argo's there putting in the 18 hp Briggs Vangaurd engine,,I have a 2000 Argo BigFoot with that engine,,,and it is pretty Quiet,,,when ideling and if your 10' ft away or so,,can hardly hear it.

they sound real loud sitting in the drivers seat, but like M350 said, you can hardly hear it 10 ft away. It sounds loud because of the enclosed area. That;s speaking from the perspective of my 02 Bigfoot. You can try a ATV shop. They usually have plenty of stock muffler assemblies laying around, and one could be easily be adapted to work! You need to be looking for a muffler from a 4x4 honda or similar, they are very quiet!

It is probably not 100% exhaust noise either. If you could put some noise insulating in the engine compartment it probably would help too.

Just my opinion, but you might hear more engine noise from the argo because the engine is right in front of you. Larry could be on the right track, sound deadner, but be careful not to cover your air vents, and watch for engine over heating. If it's exhaust noise, the more bends you have in you exhaust the quieter it will be. Side effect of restrictive exhaust, is poor engine performance, and some overheating. Try an atv shop as suggested or possibly a surplus shop for the muffler of a big John Deere lawn tractor, they are fairly quiet, and free flowing, also reasonably compact.
These were just a few thoughts, weed out what you don't like.

That vehicle goes way back into the 70 or very early 80 range. The techumseh was never a good engine to start with and with it being a single cylinder engine it will naturally make more noise. Most of which is engine noise rather than exhaust. When Argo went to the twin cylinder over head valve engine then noise level went down considerably. Like the other gentlemen have already stated that the vehicle makes very little noise ten feet or more away. Far as switching motors, it can be done but keep in mind that the engine you would most likely switch it to was not even made at that time which will require some reengineering to take care of as well as the expense.sometimes the ends do not justify the means

The tecumseh is a great reliable motor and I wouldnt change it for just the noise. But that is my opinion.

Being a former Tecumseh employee, I guess I think their motors are fine.
Just because it's a single doesn't make it bad.
Most old big thumper singles, regardless of make, are rather loud because noise restrictions were not in place in years past. Newer motors, especially big twins are inherently quieter by design.
I wouldn't change the motor because of the exhaust note, like Larry, just my opinion.

noisey engine

I came across a Kohler 17hp, KT17QS, SPEC#24217. It was in a older 8 wheel Argo, got it home and started it. Nice and quiet but about 2" to long for my engine compartment, even if i modify the mounting bracket !
Now i am looking for a smaller , in size, that will fit ! Also going to try different exhaust on original Tech. motor.
