I have one. I really enjoy it. The air cooled EFI engine is the biggest selling point for me.. I have not used it as much as I would like but so far so good. I enjoy that my wife and nephew can operate it just fine, they had trouble with my max iv. I have the lowered geared trans, (3.3) and I really like the low gear ration for my use it is great. Would like to have the larger tires for more flotation but might not really need that.

~1998 Max IV (SN 14428) on 26" TRU Power tires, winch with synthetic rope, rear seat moved back 5 inches, flip top rear seat with storage underneath, 55 lb thrust trolling motor, #24 marine Battery and a bilge pump just in case.-sold

I recently had a chance to drive one of the new efi frontiers and was very impressed with it. Lots of low end torque,very responsive,and now no more problems with cold starting and carb problems.
I believe the frontier efi is 745cc,almost as much ccs as the 31 hp kohler liquid cooled at 748ccs.
The air cooled frontier efi is about 200lbs. lighter than the HDI,which does seem to make it more responsive.
The one drawback with the frontier, is that it is still a "frontier"without the HD bells and whistles, including the admiral tranny,which I am a huge fan of,but on the flip side, about 6k cheaper than the HDI.

Well guys and gals, I opted to give one of the new EFI frontier 8x8's a try. I think that for the money, it has a lot to offer. Went with black, and the necessary add-ons: 3.3 gears, skid-plate, rear bearing extensions, hood fan, brush guard, and a windshield/soft-top. Does have a winch-mount but haven't added any specific winch yet. Also got some 25" at189's in addition to the 24"ers for testing purposes too.
That being said, I almost, and I mean almost..almost..almost went for a new XL mudd-ox.
No doubt that's a fantastic machine.
I look forward to putting the new Frontier through it's paces and sharing some input. Couldn't bring myself to go with the admiral tranny. Never have liked change much and also find myself using low-range and very slow speeds a lot.

This is very similar to an earlier thread: The New Argo 750 EFI 6x6 HDI (Kohler air cooled engine).

I think we can all figure this out as clever marketing for the new Frontier EFI so as not to compete with the liquid cooled HDIs.
Liquid cooling is more efficient and nets a few extra horse power, and a little more torque.
Bottom line, the competition has EFI engines up to 29hp, so this is Argos answer. Let the horsepower wars begin. I'm certainly glad to see the old B&S (Bop and snap) engine to go away.Last edited by Noel Woods; 02-25-2015, 10:23 AM.

Yep, hp is underrated guessing for emision reasons. Fine by me.As far as the air cooled kohler efi,anybody considering getting one of these in the south, or warmer climates should consider the hood fan option. I am very impressed with how much air this fan displaces,should eliminate the guys down south having to take the hood off to cool their air cooled unit.
Std tranny vs. admiral?
The 3.3 standard and the 8.4 high torque admiral seem to be geared fairly close,but thats where the simularities stop. In high range, the admiral acts more like power-steering,and also a much smoother transition when turning.This is a much more user friendly trans for kids, women,etc, as the "fighting"and the "strong arm steering"is eliminated. In low range the admiral is one bad animal...period.

picked up the efi frontier today. The low end power just off idle is great. Clutches engage immediately. Crawl speed with 3.3 gears is nice and slow, I mean barely-moving at all slow. High range seems very usable even when maneuvering. Much better than I expected. Even with the non-admiral tranny (I like the originals), it seems better than most of the Avengers I've driven lately.
