Can someone explain how a half link works? Is there a "hole" for the sprocket tooth in a half link? Are the pins closer together in a half link? Thanks.

Although the initial intension of this thread veered, I do not believe half links are a problem if the machines drive line was initially intended/engineered for their use (length of chain). The book does offer them as an option for use, in my opinion until initial stretch has occurred, and to be removed.
My initial response was that though the slider blocks are considerably bigger (and probably should be shortened for proper fitment on a new chain) they should have fit on with a (stretched) 170 hour chain and could possibly bring it back near the original fitment. The adjusters are tricky to always find the true bottom, though it was forgot to be mentioned mud under the cross rod could have kept the slider from hitting bottom as that Busco mud has a tendency to hide in crevices.
Glad it worked out for you.

I think we got it licked now with Apache Gear sprockets and axles. Chains fit properly now without the half links.

I'm sure our springers put less stress on the chain also. On the Maxgo I've cracked half link side plates where they bend. Exactly where you would expect failure. Usually doing mud hole tire jamming antics.Originally posted by Model Citizen View PostEvery chain in Godzilla has a half link & come to think of it so does the Gila Monster. (On the drive chains & final drive.) Not sure why people are afraid to use them. We've never broke a half link.
& we've not broken a chain yet on any of our machines. If chains break, it's usually an alignment problem, worn out sprockets or cheap quality chain not a half link.

Sorry Jeffrey I disagree and As Bridget mentioned them running them and no problems. Half links Aren't a Weak LINK! Ask any chain manufacturer! We sold Lots of combines and other machinery that uses lots of chains used under High stress and Shock loads and on most Old chains I've seen main roller links break before a master or a half link. And they all came from factory with half links in original chains. A half link is as Strong as the riveted roller links! If you breaking chains or sides are wearing you need to fix the problem or problems! Cheap chain and links are another story, as it wears- stretches quickly, and then causes excess wear on sprockets. Alignment, Worn sprockets & incorrect tension = chain failure. Hope you figure out the problem.

I have had 1 problem since buying o ring chains and a lot of my problems could have been cheap chain which brusier would stretch in 5 minutes. And axle walk which caused miss alignment. Before I changed the attex from 6 to 4 I could not keep the middle axle from walking and I sheared 3 sprocket tubes in half and they did not walk. I have a pic of 1 I split in half in my pics. I also changed to max splined axles. I then had a sprocket hub walk. I then parked it and put on 2 piece split collars and have not had any problems.
I did use cheap roller chain from tractor supply.
I think model citizen and whipper would also know a lot more than me
. And enjoy there input.
I was wandering my half links were roller was theirs orings
And who can argue with someone that jumps buses

Glad you go the chains on. I can see the new larger sliders caused the problem you had.

Half links are bad because the machine was engineered (chain length calculated) without them. Putting one in has the same effect as a chain that is too long. It will max out the tensioner and become slack......Slack chains are BAD.
If you absolutely had to....put in the half link with the intention of removing it as soon as possible.
