So after chasing down some fuel leaks and then changing out a fuel pump I figured damn .. lets go for a spin and test it out. Well ... clipping along, things are going great, start to head back home and I notice smoke in the engine bay. After getting into the yard I pop the hood and there is oil everywhere. Grrrrr.... so I chase down the oil leak and it's the valve cover. No gasket on hand so out comes the high temp gasket sealant, as I go to put the cover back on I notice the valves. One of them has a gap big enough to fit a popsicle stick in it. So never having done a valve lash job before, I start winging it. Needless to say after a few attempts I get it right or close there to..lol. So now it's off to the back 40 and another test... lets hope I finally got all these gremlins chased out.

Do a cylinder leak down test, or find top dead bottom/top and see if air leaks. Perhaps gummed/dirty /bent valve be it stem or face.
Should you feel really ambitious, my current OH160 has badly wore valve stems found after removing the head. That blew oil out the exhaust though, so once heads off you can check for cylinder wear as well as valve wear.sigpic
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
Joe Camel never does that.
