What is the top speed on the old argos.. like 72-74 models suppose to be. Im getting only 10-12 mph rapped out. Thanks Mike

What engine are you running doc? I don't know what options Argo offered back in 72, but I think there were at least a couple two-stroke models that would be a bit faster. 10-12 is quite slow for even a small 4-stroke single.

Im running a yamaha xs360 motocycle engine. The engine has 6 gears and thats where I leave it. The xs360 suppose to be 27 hp. The engine runs great, Takes very little throttle to reach high rpms. The argo trans seems to shift alright. It has the low and high and reverse, all seem to work fine.It is sprocket drive and the sprockets are about 3 1/4 diameter. It just seems like ya need to shift something to a higher gear. Thanks Mike

my 78 tech.single 4 stoke runs about 20ish MPH,the 2 stokes will double that!sounds like u need to speed up the input of argo trans.does the bike engine work "hard"at all?

Man I dont understand it. My engine is a 4 stroke. I talked to a guy that talked to Argo for me, gave him my transmission serial #, They came back and told him mine was the Higher speed transmission. Glad Im not building her for speed! I might get 12 mph out of her rapped out tight. The engine has no load whatsoever on it. I take off in 6th gear and run her in 6th. The engine runs perfect. go through all the gears everything responds like you would think it should. Being that it is a motorcycle engine, I do have a clutch. I have a 15 tooth sprocket on the engine ( stock Im pretty sure) and a 15 tooth sprocket on the argo trans. No one can tell me what the deal is? Without tearing the axles all back out of it, and changing axel sprockets, Im getting a 10 tooth sprocket tomorrow for the transmission. In all theory it ought to run 3 mph faster. 10 mph is fast enough as long as I dont have to rap it out to get there. This is not your typical set up, Ive done away with the top half and fabricated a 8 ft x 10 ft flat bed with soft sides 4ft tall to haul my goose decoys out into the field. I drive the thing standing up off the back end on a large surrey step. Somethins fishy, maybe the transmission, I checked the ratio between trans and engine ,it is 4.5 to 1 No one said that there was anything wrong with that. The only thing that is not perfect on the deal is the transmission is hard to find low gear on (it is kind of mushy feelin.) I sure dont like going on with the project without knowing whats up, but Ill try the sprocket deal tomorrow, for a quick fix. Wondering is driving me looney! Anyways any imput would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

You answered your own question.. the yamaha transmisson drops it to 4.5 to 1 before it gets to the argo tranny.

No, the yamaha turns 4.5 times to one revolution coming out of the Argo transmission.

So there's no CVT belt and pulley setup on your Argo?

Sounds like you need a bigger sprocket on the engine if torque is not an issue.

George, no I dont have any belts, and there is only so much room for a bigger sprocket on the motor. But I did get the 10 tooth sprocket for the argo trans. today and just got done installing it with a new chain. It upped my speed by a third( which is approx. 15 mph) so shell cruise at 10 mph without rapping it out , which is perfect for my deal. It still is a big mystery why the transmission is so low. youd think with the sprocket set up the way I have them ( 15 tooth on the engine , 10 teeth on the argo trans.) and engine in 6 th gear Argo in high ... shed be doin 30mph! I guess the world will never know! Thanks Doc

There's no mystery why it's slow. It used to drive off the crank into a cvt. But your m/c trans is gearing the crankshaft speed way down.

OK you get an award and an honerable mention for fabrication and thinking outside the box.
