  • PLEASE HELP-Chain adjustment problems

Hey guys, i replaced my drive gear/brake disc on the right side of the transmission and adjusted the drive chains properly, but i only got about 4 days of riding out of it untill the chain started skipping again on the right side, now the chain is loose and the right adjuster is all the way down??? what is happening? how do i fix this?

    Thanks

    What type of rig?
Did you change the size of the drive gear?
Some new chains can really stretch at first.

Maybe the chains are to long to begin with?
I'd think, if they're new, and, you're out of adjustment, maybe take a link or so out?

    Good luck,
    Henry

Does the chain need to be replaced too?

i think Mike is on to something there. what was the reason for replacing the drive gear? gears and chains wear together so if your chain is worn to your old gear it might not like the new one. i grew up in a bike shop and we saw that issue a lot if we just replaced a chain, or just a sprocket.

The old gear was worn right down, so the previos owner had the adjustment bolt right down to keep it from skipping but it started skipping, so i replaced the sprocket/brake disc and all was good for at least 4 days, but now the chain is skipping again and the chain is real loose, i have the adjustment bolt all the way in now too???

Thanks again for the help fell's

Yep, a quick (and short term) fix would be the remove a link of chain, and then loosen your tensioners up and basically start the process over. However, I urge you to make sure this is just something to get you through til your new chain comes in cause eventually that chain is gonna snap and if you are out on a ride that is gonna suck.

That's not something that is recommended unless you are in a pinch somewhere. If you remove a link you will cause premature wear on all of the sprockets. You really need to replace the chain with new chain of the same length.

Yep, just a temporary fix. Kinda the same reason I patched my flat tire last night so I could ride this weekend, and then when my new tire comes in monday I'm switchin' them out.

Well, i'm in big trouble now, all i did was tighten down the 2 adjustment bolts to the max and the chains were still a bit loose, took it down the Grand River and chains were skipping a little bit, went to go up the bank to get out of the water and the right side was really skipping, so i backed off and tried to go up again and really broke something, had to winch it up the bank and call a friend to bring the trailer, turns out the lower shaft is now bent upwards, i will take a pic tomorrow, Anyone wanna buy a broken ARGO
