  • 2001 Argo Vanguard Transmission

Having trouble shifting from gear to gear. Has been touchy since I bought it roughly 6 months ago but it has gotten to where it doesn't want to shift at all while running. Cut motor off, shifts without hesitation. Even going from neutral into a gear all it wants to do is grind. What do I need to know before I start tearing things apart? Any external fixes?

    Lower the idle.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Clutch on trans doesnt come to a complete stop so dont be gentle, pull it in with authority,or you will get grinding all day long.

OK thanks eddie, I noticed early on that you had to pick a spot and go for it. Very similar to the way you drive the Argo. Haha I'm going to adjust my idle and cross my fingers. Would be great if that is all that's wrong.

If the idle doesn't seem high or adjusting it lower doesn't seem to help, check the drive belt and make sure it is the correct size for your machine. I know someone that had the wrong size belt and had the same problem. Changed the belt and problem went away. If the belt is too short it won't let the clutches disengage. Hope it is one really simple fix!
