  • How loud are transmissions?

I flushed and switched to royal purple 75w140 day one. It seems alright, but at top speed it sounds a little whiny, even when In neutral just off idle I head a bit of a whine, are these gearboxes supposed to be quiet?

Some of them do have a whine to them. What Argo do you have and which transmission is it? Some of the bigfoots had a worse whine in high gear than low.

It's a 2000 bigfoot with a HU gearbox. I switched to Royal Purple in my truck and that got loud, I've read other forums where car enthusiast complain of noisy rearend after switching to RP. My mom's safari van started a low pitch whine when I put in lucas synthetic, maybe the argo doesn't like the 75w140 as it's too thin when cold.

Heck, check out the intro to 6x6World videos on YouTube. Even the animated Argo has a whine to it.

After reading through most of the transmission forum for noise I have some questions. If the reverse idler gear can get damaged from excessive idling (I think that's what I read) would more transmission fluid help? My cummins powered ram has the nv5600 transmission which is known to have low speed oil starvation issues, which is fixed by adding 1 quart extra nice oil comes out filling hole. My friend who ran a transmission shop said most ford and Chrysler vehicles were designed so that the oil was drained until the transmission started slipping, then 2 quarts were added. Some transmissions needed an extra 2 quarts on top of full to make them last, could the argo be the same way? Or perhaps a thinner or thicker oil?
