  • Help please with Argo advise

    Hi Guys
    Happy new year.
I have a couple of Max II, Happy with them, but keep looking at the Argo 8x8, seen two for sale in uk, Argocat avenger 8x8 750 EFI. One is 2007 , Kholer 31 hp engine, and the other is a 2009 avenger 750 EFI, Computer dash.
Do they have any running problems? What to look out for etc?
    Any help be great.
    Thanks Richie

Both good vehicles. I believe the 07 may have the bolt together brake rotor- sprockets. They didn't prove to be very long lived as the bolts worked loose. Check the big brake rotors on either side of transmission for play. If they are loose something is wrong. That's the only thing I can think of other than normal wear items.

The Argocat was the UK Distributor's brand or marketing name, believe them to be sold as just Argo now. Some of the earlier ones had different upper bodies.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

in 2007 Argo called the Efi 750"36 hp." and the carb.model something less "25 hp" I think. Now the same efi liquid cooled motor is rated a bit lower to match SAE specs I think. I wonder if the 2007 31 hp is a carbed engine. If the price is at all close I think most guys would say get the EFI. The early "computer" dash models in 2008 and 2009 had some problems but if the owner kept going back ODG finally solved the problems. I have had good luck with my 2007 750 efi

So its sort of a a spoken term and not really a model name correct?

The 2007 and earlier models had some issues with the low range and reverse gear sliding out of position on the shaft. the gears are held on the (not sure of the name of the shaft) shaft with circlips. the depth of the groove for the circlip was not cut deep enough to hold the thrust of the gear. The circlip would then come out of its groove and allow the low range and reverse gear to slide out of position. the transmission would operate in high range but lock up when in low or reverse. this was adressed by ODG in the mid 2007 models with a different grove in the shaft and a different style circlip. this happened to a freinds 2007 avenger 700. when we opened the trans, we found the circlip and gear pilled up adainst the bearing. The upgragde only requires a new shaft and circlip. All other part numbers are the same. For those who are curious. This happened 18 miles in the bush. We decided to remove the idler chains and tow the argo out as we did not know what was going on inside the trans at the time.

Thanks, I seen in one of the listings think the 2007 one on eBay, just had gear box rebuilt and less than 2 hours running since rebuild, both Argos look ok, but not sure which is the Best Buy??

Looking at this picture, may have been a rebodyed HTB , with the center hood bump for the Tecumseh.
