Tracks - Worth the $??

    Tracks - Worth the $??

    Hi,
    I'm considering tracks for my Frontier 6x6 and my wife needs your help talking me out of it. :P

    I live in Las Vegas, where desert terrain is most common. Dirt, sand, and smallish rocks prevail out here. I do enjoy swimming in the lake too...

    With that said, can I get your feedback on the value of tracks out here? Especially Whipper and any other desert dwellers...
    I've been dying to get some, and now that I have some money to do it, I want to make sure that it will be worth it.

    Or, would it be more practical to just get some Mud tires and 12 inch rims? Let me know your opinion on this...

    Tracks are amazing in the snow and slop

    But theres better places to spend the money if its always warm and dry. FYI You can't really swim with tracks on unless you are using an outboard and they say you should not use them on pavement or big rocks. If you are hell bent on buying some, get the rubber tracks.

        Why do we want tracks? Because we can!

        It's fun to crash across the impossible. In a desert it's a stretch as being sensable.. It would get you into the winter backcountry if that intrests you.

          Oh it definately does interest me... I've wanted to move north for a LONG time now... ANYWHERE north. Someplace with SEASONS, RAIN, REAL TREES AND GRASS. The closest I can get down here is Mount Charleston... at least there are pine trees there. Oh how I would love to go through a swamp or marsh.
          We just have too many darned "ties" here.

              This is just my opinion, but unless you are spending considerable time in marshy/muskegy swamp or deep snow, you don't want tracks.
              I spend most of my time riding in this type of terrain, and have 2 Argo's (Tracks for both machines), and I try not to run tracks as much as possible.
              They are hard on Axles
              They are hard on bearings
              They are hard on tires
              They are hard on chains
              THEY ARE A PITA ON ROCKY, UNEVEN GROUND AND THEY ARE VERY BAD SWIMMERS

              Now, that being said, they look cool and they go amaizing places. I would not have an Argo without a set of tracks.

                  ok.. the neighs have it.

                  This is all great info. I think I just wanted tracks for the "coolness factor".
                  Oh well... I think I'll pass. Until we move NORTH I guess...

                  Now... next phase:
                  Where can I find 5 lug, 12 inch diameter x 8-10 inch width rims?

                    Tracks

                    Roc Doc,

                    I heard if tracks are on snow, they're not so hard on the axles, bearings, tires and such. Is that pretty much true?? I'm thinking of getting some later on here for my Frontier but won't be able to afford them for quite a while. Are the plastic ones good in snow??, I think they are the cheaper ones. I'd buy them for some backcountry snow trips up here but probably wouldn't use them in the summer. I want to get a windshield and a top first, then get the tracks. I'm getting my outboard mount/transom this weekend.

                    SilverBullet, I broke my ties years ago and moved up here to Alaska after retiring from the military. It was painless. Alaska is about as close as I want to get to my family in Missouri haha.

                        actually, I'm starting to end my tire/tracks quest... finding it's not really practical or needed at this point. (There is really nothing wrong with the stock Frontier tires).

                        So... I'll start searching the site for power mods now.

                          Silver, Mary says hi. I dont know how powdery the sand is there but in the ocean dunes were it realy powdery the Frontier tires are like paddle wheels. just need more speed. to climb the steep ones.

                              I would say that is a "somewhat" true comment. There are variables to consider:
                              Snow depth/consistancy (ex. If you try to straddle a snowmobile track, you will find that your machine will want to "slide of" one way or the other. This is due to the fact that only the inside edge of your tracks will ride on the packed trail and cary all the load, this will put alot of stress on your axles/hubs) (Also, when running the edge of your tracks on an obstical, this can cause the track guides to push into the sidewalls of your tires. This can cause cuts in sidewalls and also can push tires off the bead)
                              Weight of load in Argo (A large load in the Argo will put alot of stress on your front axles/hubs.....ESPECIALLY when breaking trail)
                              Angle of attack (sidehilling) (Puts stress on the downhill side axles)
                              8x8 or 6x6 machine (8x8 machine needs to have the tracks tighter, putting more stress on front and rear axles)

                              Argo's are pretty useless in snow, without tracks. So, if you intend to run snow, you will need tracks.

                              Plastic tracks are OK in snow (Better with paddles and/or ice cleats). The trick is to try to NOT spin the tracks as much as possible. I have limited experience with the rubber tracks, and so will not comment on them.
