  • Some Video of my Argo at Hog Waller ATV Park

First time at Hog Waller ATV park near Palatka Florida- the mud pits and some of the mud areas were pretty extreme, I pulled out so many lifted machines that I lost count after about two hours-but it was a lot!!!

In the mud pits one machine was stuck so bad that when his daughter stepped into the mud she sunk so badly that they needed a rope and the Hydraulic lift of a log Skidder to pull her out, after she was pulled out the worker needed the same lift to pull him out of the mud. Wheeled machines got hopelessly stuck in this type of mud while my Argo stayed on top of all this soft stuff you couldn't walk in. My machine only sank about four inches in this stuff.

I was hoping to run with another Argo but he lost his reverse and low range gears and had to leave about the time I arrived. Any way I got some video but my son wasn't with me so it's not great quality but I did run the machine through very extreme swamp conditions.

Nice video Dan, your Argo with Adair tracks made short work of those impassable hog wallers. It was funny to watch the Lady and man get pulled out of the gunk by the skid loader.

Noel That machine was a four seater with kids, I pulled up next to his machine picked up his kids and took them out of the pit. Once the young lady was pulled out of the mud I pulled my Argo right into the area that had stuck her and the worker and loaded her in the Argo and carried her to safety. What you didn't see in the video was that the log skidder couldn't get to one machine because the mud was to soft. I pulled up to the back of the machine grabbed the tow strap and carried it to the skidder. There must have been a hundred people watching the Argo drive right through the areas where the log skidder couldn't go and wheeled machines were hopelessly stuck.

I am quite sure there were a lot of wives telling there husband that if he wanted to play in the mud with family members aboard that tracked Argo was going to be necessary for future mud runs. Even the worker who watched my machine roll right through the soft mud told me that the Argo was a very impressive machine.

I am not trying to down play the capabilities of the 4x4's but this stuff was very serious mud and several people saw for them selves that mud, families and wheels are not a good combination in mud this soft.

Several of the machines that I pulled out couldn't turn their wheels until I got them moving. I asked one 4x4 why he couldn't turn his wheels and he told me the mud creates such a strong suction that the wheels on an 80 horse power 800cc 4x4 can't deliver enough power to turn the wheels once the mud sucks them down.

Driving through this type of mud and watching the wheeled machines buried to the top of there axles while my Argo only sank about four inches made me understand for the first time just how important PSI is and why a tracked machine going through soft mud makes ever thing look so easy to a lifted machine.

              Awesome video Dan!
Thats some deep, sticky mud. Looks like your back with the HDI? You spend time at lots of different runs, and in the thick nasty stuff, can you share your thoughts about going back to the HDI,vs the new frontier your ran last year? Also, will we see you in Texas?

Fox, the machine is my Frontier 8x8 750 EFI. Frontier vs HDI: I like the low range in the frontier for pulling out 4x4's. I don't like the HDI low range in deep mud because the counter rotation over loads the capabilities of the machine very quickly. I rarely used the HDI low range. The HDI had all the power I needed in deep mud and the continuous drive to both tracks was a big advantage to keeping the machine moving and on top of mud. My HDI with tracks would top out at 18 to 20 MPH and got there very quickly. The frontier will only reach 15 on the trail and takes a while to get there. The frontier seems to have better control on the trail then the HDI but every turn bleeds speed from the Frontier and turns take a lot more power then the HDI. If you are in nasty mud with the frontier you HAVE TO BE IN low range. With the HDI you could power through almost any thing in high range and go through bad stuff at a higher speed and use momentum to get you right through.

The counter rotation has it's place on the HDI but I think the ideal combination would be a high range, a really low, low range and a separate lever when you wanted or need low range counter rotation. With all the machines I pull out I would prefer my low range to be about twice as low as it currently is-Perhaps a three speed?

In my opinion the Frontier 750 EFI in it's current configuration is under powered and would be an absolute blast with about 38 horse power, a lower low range and a 22 MPH top speed. ARE YOU LISTENING ARGO????? I must have had two hundred people watching my Argo watching pull out side by sides. Let's make Adair tracks an option on the Argo and give these machines more power and a lower low range so the folks have some thing to see!!!!!!!!!!

Great video! The Argo/Adair combo is unstoppable. I wonder how many Argo's you sold that day lol.
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

Dan sounds as if an avenger efi would suit you, if it had a 3 speed.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
                    Joe Camel never does that.

Why just three speeds? I do think Dan's point on the power is spot on. I think these days you would have to look on the small side to find a atv that has around 23hp or so. As Dan pointed out, he was pulling out side by sides with 80hp. I really wish we had more horse power options, and a water cooled engine option. I've not managed to overheat the Kohler engine in my Frontier 8x8, but the lack of power is noticeable. Maybe if the Aegis 31hp engine was an option....or maybe something more powerful could be in the works?

Noel that was my point, the avenger 750 efi with the single diff trans like yours.

I would be happy with a Kohler CH1000, 38 horse power, 55 foot pounds of Torque and weighs only 150 pounds- the one thing I would really like is a 5000 RPM rev limit, that would put my machine at about 20 mph and give me all the grunt I wanted.

Kohler is going to release the long awaited EFI 1000 in about two months and that engine would hit the spot in my Argo frontier. I doubt that the EFI 1000 bad boy would bog down every time I made a simple turn.
