  • Restoring an Argo Conquest 1994 from day one.

One year ago I heard that a friend had an Argo that had been standing for a lot of years but he didnt want to sell it. After a year he agreed to sell it so I bought it.

It had been standing outside with the drainplugs in for 4-5 years,on and off filled with water.
First picture is from when I went to look at it the first time.
It had 5-6" of ice in it...

My friend lifted it with a loader so I could load it on a trailer but didnt lift it to the trailer, hard work pulling it up with a handwinch and all the wheels stuck on the Argo..
Pulled it in to my temporary workshop with my loader, much easyer!

    [IMG][/IMG]

The workshop had been a storage room (mostly for broken furniture and garbage..)
It has now been cleaned up and filled with tools, some machines workbenches, much nicer to work in now but still alot of stuff that I Have to move (and throw away) to be a good workshop..

Since I didnt have enough heaters I covered the argo and put a heater inside to melt the ice and snow

    [IMG][/IMG]

I dont have water there so I could clean it out properly,I just have to scrape of the dirt.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Since it has been under water for so long, its a struggle to work with. Everything is rusted so its stuck,bolts,chains,screws- All is stuck!

    [IMG][/IMG]

I hade to make a tool to remove the sprockets, they are impossible to remove even using heat, cold and all the other tools I have..

    [IMG][/IMG]

But now the left side is dismanteled.
The new sealings and bearings have arrived but I am still missing the cork gaskets before I could start to put together that side.

The gearbox was stuck since it was filled with ice.
It was also alot of dirt inside it..

    [IMG][/IMG]

I took it apart and changed all the bearings and sealings. On the picture is covered in frost since I put it in the freezer (and the side of the gearbox in the oven) before putting it together. It went smooth fixing it when it was hot/cold. Didnt have to put any stress on the bearings

    [IMG][/IMG]

I will continue the update when I have more time, time to go to sleep now here in Sweden!

    Update.

I broke the primary clutch when trying to remove it (had to use an iron bar to get it loose) and the starter was stuck with rust..

    [IMG][/IMG]

I was able to high pressure clean the hull a day when it wasnt to cold outside, before and after clean up!

    [IMG][/IMG]
    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

I used an acid (called Oxal acid in Sweden) mixed with wallpaperglue to remove the rust from the hull, the rust was impossible to clean of the plastic with the high preassure wash. The acid worked great!

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

After alot of cleaning and scrubbing,I have started to paint the frame!

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

All the outer bearings and and sealings have arrived so I will start to assemble as soon as possible, pictures are coming!
I have also started the engine!!
Great quality if it is able to start after been under water on and off for 4-5 years!
I changed the oil 3 times before starting, just run the (new) starter until I got oilpressure, run it on the starter for a while and changed the oil.
    Now it runs!!

    To be continued!

    Update:
The frame is straitend and painted,it was bent on three places
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Painting the rims,undercoat
    [IMG][/IMG]

    Painted with olive drab,bad picture..

    New chains are in![IMG][/IMG]

The new upholster seats are in
    [IMG][/IMG]
    [IMG][/IMG]

Bending the wall since it was wery warped, put it in 70 degre water for 30 minutes and after that it was good!
    [IMG][/IMG]

I gotta tell you mate, what an inspiration this is to me ! Every Time i think i can't take it anymore, having daily "Argo headaches" popping up,& trying to learn as much as possible to solve problems in my attempt to restore my Pa's argo magnum, i will Revisit this thread, pick my balls up off the floor, lift my chin & make with the wrenching !

Thanks Kris W! And sorry for the late reply,I had missed your nice comment!

The conquest runs great now after the restauration,I used it alot now during the summer,I made a long hard testdrive building hunting towers in the mountins for the moosehunt (season starts this monday). I was pulling a boggietrailer loaded with buildingmaterial and tools and it never got stuck, not even in the wettest and dampest mire!
I will use it now for pulling the mooses down from the mountains, will be great!
