  • Newb Questions... Sorry in advance...

So, got my 8X8 argo magnum, cant find anything that says what yr it is, dont have a title or ownership, it has an 18 hp Kohler engine, I want to change the oil but I don't even know if it has an oil filter, and I can't see the bottom of the engine From looking under the hood. . My grandfather has all but lost his memory and so I can't ask him. The windshield is so "cloudy" that I can't see through it, is that something I can repair or do I have to replace the Lexan ? Breaks feel like they need work, is it hard to change the brake pads? Without knowing the serial number I'm having a hard time figuring out which parts to order. Like I said in the title sorry for the "new guy" questions, any help would be greatly appreciated.

send a pic but if it has hydralic brakes it is most likly a 92 or 93 magnum, brake pads are not hard to chaings pull 4 cotter pins thats it,i use an extraction pump to get the oil out.just clean it with some good cleaner you shouldent have to replace the windshield.

To answer your oil filter question, many of the Kohlers did not have an oil filter. For the windshield, you can replace with lexan or plexiglass. Over time they will scratch and spiderweb as well but they are a cheap alternative to glass.

Hope you used DOT5 brake fluid.

If you did, you need to replace it. I have limited experience with the wrong brake fluid in the system, but what I have found is that the dot3, when it gets hot, expands and locks up the brakes. Also, it can eat the seals.

Hold on a minute; wouldn't Curtis' Magnum have been designed around a DOT 3 fluid brake system? We've also got to be careful to call out the differences between DOT 5.0 and 5.1 as they're completely different animals and shouldn't (can't) be combined in a system. DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid and 5.1 is glycol based (just like DOT3 and 4). Replacing the entire system with DOT5 (if that's what you want to do) is going to require draining/cleaning every last bit of DOT3 brake fluid out of the lines/calipers/reservoir before reintroducing DOT 5. I'm not going to say it's not, but I'd be surprised if he's running DOT5 in that older system.

::EDIT:: I see his Magnum is a '92 vintage machine. I honestly have no idea if they would've used DOT5 in that system, but Jim/Fox and other Argodudes would know. Let's just make sure he knows what's in there and what he's putting in as far as the 5.0/5.1 issue is concerned.

Yeppers, Dot 5, my grandfather insisted, repeatedly, that I never use anything except.5 in the Argo. lol, here's a couple pics going to try and post them this is my first attempt at posting pics so we'll see how this goes. One of the pics you can see the floor in the back,The steel pan between the frame rails is completely rotten, i'm wondering if I could just cut that out and put in some galvanized sheet metal.?

Hey Curtis, by the looks of it you and I have the same machine ! give or take a year... My grandfather bought mine brand-new in the early 90's and has had it since. Apparently The dealer told him when he bought it to never use anything other than DOT 5 brake fluid. So I think you can safely assume that is what you should use.

Yes kris you are right! Anyways you have a nice machine there and I like how you have the conquest sticks instead of the magnum sticks, might do that too good idea,my grandfather also owned me magnum and bought it new in 1993 and he died 3 years ago due to cancer and he gave it to me before he died, also you need new chains by the looks of it

How can you tell my chains need changed from that pic ?? ? Im hearing a "knocking" when i brake, i think it is "chain slap" so you would be correct !
