busting pins

  • busting pins

    i have only gone through one tank of fuel since i replaced all my chains and pins a nd i have already blown two pins on the centre axle, it is always on the centre axle. Can anyone explain why this one would be busting pins more than any other one its not like i have been riding it hard. 1984 IC 6x6

    Check and see if there is much dirt build up in the sprockets,the dirt may be putting extra strain on the chain,make sure the 2 chain links are in the middle and one plate on the outside along with the hair pin on the very outside.

      Curtis its the pins holding the sprocket from spinning on the shaft that keep popping.

          Are you using roll pins or spiral pins?

            Check the circumfrence of all your tires. if the one on that axle is way bigger it could add extra strain. My old Argo did not discriminate as to which axle it broke pins on

                Roll or spring pins will work loose spiral pins are better.
                You can also add a thinner roll pin inside the outer roll pin.

                  A spiral pin should semi cure the problem. They are there for a reason in that times thinking, there were next to no broken axles back then.

                    if tire size is what is popping roll pins where should i have the largest tires ? I am asking again because i just blew the center axle pins again.

                      Make them all the same size. Put all your tires at 5psi. Take a fabric tape measure or a length of rope and wrap it around the middle of each tire taking note of the circumference until you identify the smallest diameter tire in your set. Then air down the other tires until they all match it's diameter, a length of rope with a sharpie mark works well for this. As you reach the desired diamter, write on the inside of each rim the required air pressure to get that diameter. Some tires may have 3psi, some may have 5psi, etc but they will all be the same diamter.

                        Also how worn are the sprocket pin holes? Excessive wear will slap them against the pins, if just the sprocket holes are wore and not the axle holes, you could relocate them 90 degrees to get into fresh metal. If both are wore you may need to up the pin size slightly.
