  • 6 wheel or 8 ?

Iam looking to buy a argo for the first time iam not sure if I should go 6 wheel or 8 what are the advantages of each.

    Go 8

If you have more than 1 person you expect to go riding with you then go with an 8 wheeler. Your never regret the extra space. A 8 can climb a steeper hill safely, and offers a slightly better ride due to the longer wheel base. It may be a bit tighter in the bush but most issues in the bush tend to be width related and not always length. Just watch your a$$ end when turning in tight quarters.
The rear sits on a 6 are not fit for humans. Once the first time fun wears off, the bruises and lashing the rear passengers take, you will no longer have anyone who wants to come with you.

The main advantage of the 6 over the 8 is that it steers a little easier and is easier on the drive train to run with tracks. Other than that the 8x8 is definitely the way to go. If there is no chance you will want to haul much or ride with more that 2 people then stick with the 6. Otherwise, you will regret it I think.

I'm all for the 6. If I had 8, there's no possible way I could travel inthe places I take it! The 6 is almost to big for some of the trails. I pack lite, and do not use it for long travel. It's perfect for my needs, but if I could get an 8 for family fun I would!

I don't know, you would have a hard time convincing me that a 6 can go anywhere that an 8 couldnt go. There is no difference in width and if the length made it to where you could not get through something then I would be amazed. I have ridden with a 6 once and was not impressed other than he was a tad faster and could turn with less stress on the drive train.

I know nothing about Argo's, but I would be tempted for 8 wheels over 6....provided that where you ride there is room for a larger vehicle. 8 contact patches vs. 6.....only thing is that buying tires would hurt a little more.
                Hammers should have warning labels.

It's the lenth that would stop me! I hunt in several area's that are not accessable by any other means than AATV, or use a boat & walk the gear 5mi into thewoods. The trails, if you call them that, were originally foot trails. My favorite hunting spot is a hard to get to place. There are several spots where the only possible route in any atv is between large boulders. You are basically riding in a 6' wide crack in a rock. The curves in that rock are not going to allow for another axle, I have to work at getting the 6 wheels I have through. 8 would not go at all, the tight turns & 9' tall walls will not permit it! It's not necessarily the 2 extra wheels, more about the way an argo turns.(drags the rear end around)

Like i said it is what I need, but there have been a few times I wish I had a 8. When i want to take more than one person fishing it sucks to have a 6. When I'm duck hunting with a large group, some of the dick blinds are only accessable by water, and I have to carry in one person at the time! That's 3 trips for one blind! That's 1200yds round trip, and 3 times over! That's no fun!

                    Hey Greasemonkey,
Would a floating trailer be an option for you?!? Argo has one, as well as other companies out there!

I thought about a trailer. We decided to get a few of the cheap 3man boats from walmart to tow across the ponds! I'm gonna use an old junk yard jeep front axles. I'll weld the axles together, cut the stubs, fab some hitch inserts. That will leave U-joints at both ends! I'll put some yard trailer axles & wheels under it & have an anphibious trailer with a 800lb capacity! I'll build 2, one for the farm & one for me! I have been thinking this over for some time now & it should work with no problem! I'll be able to cross ponds with one passenger in the argo + gear, and have 3 passengers in the trailer + gear. I had one of the cheapo walmart boats a while back & gave it away to clear out the junk around the shop. Wish i still had it now!

                        Argo Trailers

I read some where on this site that the Argo trailers were not that great for what you have to pay for them. I thought of taking a john boat (flat bottom) and making a T frame with wheels. You could set the boat on it and strap it down. That way you could pull it across land and it would float across the water to. That way you would have a boat and a trailer boat for the Argo. Just a thought. Cougar

                            6 or 8 wheels

                            Hi Steve
                            I have a 2006 avenger, which is a 8 wheel machine. I have driven a
6x6(was told that the back was very tight for passengers, was my deciding factor). Bought a used 2003 Conquest for the price of a New 6x6. Pictures are on galley. Put the conquest up for sale and bought the Avenger. The black color, more ground clearance was what caught my eye.

The space is what i like about the 8's over the 6's. I love to take a crowd when possible riding. I think i have had as many as 9 adults and children in the machine at on time. Thats a lot of laughs all going at the same time. I originally bought it so that my family could ride all at the same time. Children are grown and thought that since we rode 3 wheelers together when they were young this would be great!!! They have ridden maybe once.

The wife and i have plenty of room in the back when we go to the lake and putter around, even take the dogs sometimes. Motor is a 9.9 mariner 4 stroke. Is pretty stable in water also. Sitting in back seems to keep the nose up.

All the guys on this tread have made good points, i guess the big item is what are you wanting to do with your machine. Expense may drive you one way or the other and there are a lot of good used machines for sale in 8 and 6 wheel versions. You should be able to find the machine you really want, but this may take a little looking.

The 6x6 can get in tighter spaces but the 8x8 can go most of the places a detour may be necessary sometimes but i think we can all arrive at the same place. The 8x8 does seem to dig a little better in mud because of the extra wheels. The video of the CAW ride on April 19th shows a nice mud pit run with Avenger .

Don't know if you have purchased a machine yet, but if not maybe this will help. Good hunting and have fun with what you decide on.
