Moded Shifter Idea!!!

I know that I'm not the only 6'+ guy in an argo. That means there are others that beat the devel out of the old left knee, on the shifter knob! I have been thinking about the current shifter, shortening, bending, ect....
I recently came off the idea of shortening the shifter on the trans. now, drilling out a hole for a roll pin, and attaching a new shift lever to the shortened one! This would allow the shifter to hand down against the fire wall, out of the way, and when you lift it up 90* it will operate as it should!
This will surely save the bruises on my knee from ever happening! If i ever get time I'll try it!

At 6'3", I feel your pain. Not as bad in high gear as low gear. If you have it in low gear your gonna feel the shifter. I tried turning the shifter up side down but then it hits the fire wall around the belt. Let me know how it works. Seth

Well I have been screwing around, and putting off some mods, so I guess it's timeto get moving on this idea, and a few others.

Another thing you can look at is where the seat back is located. There are two different anchor holes in the body where the seat back screws down, about an inch or so apart. Mine was in the forward position and I moved it back. Not for knee room but because I made a bigger/thicker backrest. You'll probably need better foam in the seat if you move the backrest, if your butt is hitting the plastic ridge behind the seat. Maybe I should start selling foam and backrests.

roger sign me up! I have been thinking about a back rest mod just haven't decided the best way. Do you have any pics of yours and maybe I could steal your idea.

I used the original back as a pattern and made it taller, can't remember if I added to top and bottom or just the top. I used what would be considered 2" firm seat cushion foam in the Back. Seat foam is stiffer than Back cushion foam in the upholstery business. I had a new, larger cover sewn.

The argo seat is more important than the backrest for comfort. I found some very stiff 3" dense foam for it. The stock foam is tapered down to 2.5" in the back. The HD 3" stuff keeps me from ever bottoming out on the plywood, and I don't feel the argo body behind the seat anymore. I use the original seat cover.

I know the factory backrest feels like your leaning against a 4x4. I find myself leaning forward most of the time and that helps absorb some of the ride bucking. I like the idea of a better seat too I think i might look into that.

I'm 6'2" and it's not comfortable at all! I have been trying to figure out what to do, and decided when I finally get heat in my shop I'll try some low back bucket style lawnmower seats. I'll just remove the lower & back rest sections, and use the subframe to mount them!

Most of my majr mods are waiting on warmer days. It just got down into the 30's here, and killed my desire to work.

lawnmower seats would work good and give us big guys some much needed room. I also was thinking about some boat seats. I have a pair that fold down for storage. kinda like a johnboat seat. I have been trying to decide if I should put them in or not. Alot of times I need the bench seat because my kids ride in the front with me most of the time. Maybe an old school bus seat would work

I would probably be better served with the bench too, seeing as how you reminded me about the kiddy passengers. I would probably be more comfortable if the bak rest was about 2/3" further back!
