  • Bell Ring and Op Temps

I just got a low-time argo magnum back together and have discovered two quirks I would like to establish as either normal or needing attention

    1) At higher speeds, there is a bell ringing sound that seems to be coming from either the clutches or tranny. It is hard to determine its origin, but appears to be in this area. Dropping the throttle after it starts increases the volume of it. I thought maybe the tranny was missing a tooth, but when I changed the oil there was very little particulate in the fluid.

    2) For those of you with the same argo, what op temps do you see? I saw between 200 and 230 after an hour of moderate operation. I have read these kohler 18s ran hot, but I wanted to ensure I don't burn it up for no reason.

A pre-emptive thanks to the brain-trust on this forum

Can't comment on the temps but that bell ringing sounds familiar. Had something similar with a loose washer on the clutches but I can't remember if it was the primary or secondary. I think it was the primary. A spacer washer or something that had some play and would bounce against the housing. Memories foggy but something to check.
