  • Conquest/Avengers and fishing

Well, I just got back from a 2 week fishing trip with the family. LOTS of AATV action, and some pretty good fishing too.
It all started with about a 10 mile Argo ride into the Remote Trophy Fishing Lake. First ride in, I had 6 people and lots of gear in the Conquest, had to leave 3 more Argo loads at the truck for return trips. I lucked out, when I got to the lake, I noticed a couple choppers sitting at the end of the air strip. I rushed down to my cabin to unload so I could go see who was flying. My lucky day, it was a friend (who just happens to be the Chopper companies "Base Manager"). In return for cleaning his fish, I talked him into flying a load into the lake for me (we managed to pack 2 Argo loads into the chopper). I went out for the last load a couple days later. (It's just SICKENING, We only took 4 minutes to fly out to my truck. It took longer to take off and land than to make the trip. I'm doing good to make it in 2 hrs when loaded)

It's not easy to condence a 2 week trip into an 8 min vid, I had to cut alot of material. However, I did get lots of good AATV action.
I really hate to say it, but the Conquest turned out to be the "Machine of the trip". No breakdowns, very few stucks, and I drove circles around the Avengers.........LITERALLY.
Comments from Avenger owners (There were 3 of them)
    "That thing is F###ing AWESOME"
    "Unbelievable"
"You are getting better traction than I am"
"What kind of tires are those"
    "Stop being such a wise-ass"

Yes, it's a totally different machine. There are now 4 other Conquests around here that also have Frontier tires. All owners are very much impressed by the performance of the tires. I have made a little change to my Secondary Clutch to help compensate for the power loss (due to turning the larger tires). I pulled my clutch apart and tightened the spring by one hole. This has the effect of keeping the clutches "geared down" longer, and also it "Gears down" faster when I slow down. This little change has had a HUGE effect on the performance of the machine while loaded heavy (Which I usually am). I don't even need the low range MOST of the time now. However, I would recomend that this be done in a properly equiped shop, not over a stump, 10 miles out in the bush, with a pair of plyers and a sledge hammer

I have been teasing the Avenger owners mercilessly about the price differance between my tires, and there new machines. Now, I'm NOT saying my Conquest is better, but I'm sure impressing the HELL out of the Avenger owners.

The Frontier tires are a great improvement for any amphib. I'm real interested in the performance difference you experienced with your Frontier equipped Conquest over the Avenger. So far my experience is the Avenger competely blowing away everything else... and I don't mean just Argos.
I have yet to run the new Frontier 8x8 (haven't really been dealing in Argos recently). I do believe it just might be the ultimate Argo. First, recent price increases have pushed the Avenger into a price range above new full size trucks. The Frontier 8x8 combines the performance of the 24" Frontier tires, lighter weight 23hp Briggs (very simple design compared to the Kohler liquid), and still has most all Avenger parts. I know the 6x6 version of the Frontier whoops everything else, so adding the 8x8 capacity would be that much better.

                  MaxRules ,

I think that statement will change when the 8x8 Mud OX is run head to head with an Argo Avenger .

I have never come across a Frontier 8x8, the local dealer only brings in Avengers now, and only brought in Conquests in the past (unless ordered).
About the only thing that I could see it offering over the Conquest is the little bit more clearance (due to tub design). The extra little HP is easily made up for with a little clutch work. I would have concerns about the air cooled Briggs, I have found that the Air cooled engines run REALLY hot on bright summer days, to the point that they will melt the upper body/hood plastic. This might not be a problem now, but it was in the past.

I would love to try one out, if only to see if they are any better than a Conquest (simillarily equiped, of course). With many parts being interchangeable, I think that a Conquest on 24's is a pretty hard machine to beat, in reliability and price.

Why buy a Frontier 8x8 when you can just buy a set of tires?
I believe that this was the concern some dealers had when I originally tried to purchase a set of these tires. I also believe that this is why I got such a "runaround" when trying to get the the tires.

                        Great movie Rock Doc

I just watched your family fishing trip for the first time Doc, really nicely done. I enjoyed the kids catching the fish, the cute little girls wanting to pet the fish is classic. They want to pet them and then we eat them, of course, I saw a lot of catch and release but eventually I'm sure one wound up in the frying pan somewhere along the line. Your Argo sure sounds like it runs good. Hey meant to ask you what kind of tire pressure you running with those Frontier tires?? I may have to run the same pressure w/mine. I think I have the same tires as you have on my Frontier 6x6.

I like the idea of putting that spare on the back of your partner's Argo. Looks like it's mounted on a transom though. How's he got that mounted??

                          Hey Dennis

I am running 2.5psi in the tires, but a good friend of mine likes 3 psi better. I can't really tell the differance between the two, and I doubt that the Argo's can either.
Nobody around here runs an outboard, so we all have steel racks around the backs of the Argo's and steel bumpers/push bars on the fronts. We all have the racks extended out the back to carry tool boxes/Gas cans/spare tires exc. I posted a pic of mine a while back.

Talk to ya later, I just got back to town from a music festival, and am heading out to the bush for a week of fishing tomorrow WooHoo.

                            Rock Doc

I cleaned up my axles again this weekend and while my tires were off, took some air out of all 6 of them to 3 lbs. What does that actually do for you, give you better traction?? They came from the factory set at around 5 lbs. Any problems with flats due to losing the seal the bead provides?? Anyway, looking forward to going out again w/the 3 lb pressure to see if anything is diff.

                              Dennis,

You are right, it does give you much better traction as well as a softer ride. It allows the tires to conform better to the terrain and grip around it. As far as losing the bead, if you have a beadlock on your wheel you can drop the pressure down to 1psi and be fine.
