hello i have a 1996 argo , the trans will slip out of gear in 1 and 2rd gear, does anyone has any idea what i could do to fix this problem? thank you kuseven

Trans problem
Hi kuseven, I just had that same problem just weeks ago with my 1985 vanguard trans. The only difference is that my trans will slip out only in first gear. After i openned her, i found that the main shaft( the one with your driven pulley installed on) had a really worn gear( the first gear) It seem to be the only damage. The other shaft ( with the sliding gear) didn't have nothing, i was lucky... So if i m right you have the same problem except both of your gear are almost gone... I hope for you that it's the only think broken. I called for the price of this shaft and they told me it was 200$... I am lucky enough to have a spare trans on hand... So i will rebuilt the other one on my free time and put it on the shelf for spare... Hope it helped you...

Just before the recession of '81, I was being trained to take over the "old master's" job of assembling trannies at the Argo plant. If memory serves me correct (which it may not!) the tranny held its gear by employing spring-loaded ball bearings in the shaft. As the shifter moved the sleeve over the the shaft, the balls would line up with holes on the sleeve and hold the shifter in position. This is the clicking sound you should hear when you shift from gear to gear. So I was thinking maybe the ball springs are just worn out.
There may be way more to it, but I thought I'd mention this as a cheap check before spending real money. One thing I hate about using a spare tranny, is that now you have no spare trannyForget the house... Let's see the Shop!!
