  • Help with Squealing.

    If my belt is squealing whenever I try to turn or it gets a little bogged down what do I need to do? I just recently replaced the belt and it solved a lot of my problem but it still squeals some whenever it gets bogged down just not nearly as bad as it used too. I watch the Argos on the videos on here and none of them seem to squeal or get bogged down for that matter. I don’t have anyone in my area to go talk to or look at their machines to compare mine too so what do I do? It’s a 97 Response with about 550 hours on it. I have only put about 50 hours on it. Thanks guys.

    Are you sure you have the correct belt? A wrong belt will in a way change your final gear ratio which would explain the bogging down and squealing. Also maybe there is some sort of drag in the drivetrain? Im not familiar with argo but maybe stuck parking brake or something? Just throwing ideas out before you go to your clutches.

      My guess is that you need to rebuild your clutches. Either your weights are not sliding easily in your primary clutch, to close the clutch and grab the belt tightly. OR, (and this is what I really think is your problem) The spring in your Secondary clutch is getting weak (typical 500 hr problem). When this spring gets weak, your secondary clutch will not "Backshift". This has the effect of keeping you in a "Higher Gear" causing the bogging, and to some extent "belt squeal". The squeal comes from your primary clutch slipping, in this case.
      For a temporary fix you can pop your secondary apart and adjust your spring to the next tighter adjustment hole.
      I actually just had to do this while out on my last fishing trip. I recommend that you do it in a well tooled shop, as opposed to over a stump with plyers and a sledge hammer

        LOL, sound like you know from experiance.

        I think your probably right on the secondary clutch spring.

          Thats kinda what I thought, that the clutches needed to be rebuilt. What about in hot weather. I had it out today on my lease and I noticed as it got hotter in the day it would slip or squeal easyier. Does hot weather affect them much. It was near 100 F here today at midday.

            Yes, I also notice a differance when it's hot out, but clean/well lubed clutches will help. When it gets to the point where your machine really start acting up, I would recomend that you just stop for a bit, leave the Argo running, and take a little break.
            Do not.....EVER..... try to "force cool" the clutches. No peeing on them or pouring water on them (lol, I know, I know. I didn't have to say that.)
