  • New guy here with some Qs about Argos

I've read that pretty much all advice here is gospel, so let's see. I'm looking at, long-distance via the internet, a 1983 Argo 6 wheeler. I've wanted an 'AmphiCat' or other since I was a kid, you know, the GI Joe Adventure Team had a yellow ATV & how can we forget The Banana Splits on Saturday mornings? Over the last year or so I've started looking a little harder. Unfortunately, there used to be a bunch of 6 wheelers around my area, but now there are mainly 4 wheelers. Also, unfortunately, it's not feasible to go look at this one in person, but the seller seems pretty legit. Even with shipping I don't think I'd be spending too much, but I'd like to know what to ask about in case I haven't already done so. I've been told by several people who've had experience locally with these that an Argo is the one to have. So, this one has a Tecumseh engine. It also comes with a top & a windshield. The seller tells me it's in good shape. (What else would he say?) What about the year model? Good, bad in general. What's a fair price. I know most shipping quotes I've seen have been between $600 & $800, so I'm taking that as it is. If I could look at it in person, it'd be different, but for now, I'm open to any particularly prudent advice. Thanks & maybe I'll be around a bit more in the future.

And if they did, they wouldn't buy it out from under me, would they? So, what the heck, anyone around Alberta, Canada?

OK, so I won't hit the brakes fast. How bad are the trannies about stripping? I mentioned the name AmphiCat to a buddy a while back & he did tell me to stay away from them. Lord, tho, I had no idea there were so many brands of 6 wheelers around. Some folks around here who had them back then speak highly of that vintage Argo, & no one thus far has ever talked bad about a Tecumseh, tho I think I'd prefer a Briggs & Stratton over that. I don't plan to do anything hard with it anyway. I bought a 3 wheeler last year, a Honda ATC 250ES. My dad & I had some off-brand 3 wheeler 25 - 30 years ago & I loved it. Never wanted a 4 wheeler, I have a real Ford Bronco for that. Besides, 4 wheelers are for sissies! & a 6 wheeler is just two 3 wheelers anyway.

My best advise would be to simply be patient. More deals will come around, closer to you and at a better price. No need to take a risk on a vehicle you can't look at and spend even more on shipping. A 1983 anything is quite old. If that's all you can afford it's great to just get into a 6x6 any way you can. Often waiting for the right deal can get you a newer vehicle at a lower price. There are lots of Argos in Canada. For what the '83 will cost with shipping, a newer vehicle can be had closer to home that you can inspect first.
