argo trany ?

ok... i got the old argo running, greased up, and the brakes fixed. tried a test drive today and it made a nasty grinding/ poping noise while turning. quick back to the shop and adjusted the chains from the trany to the axle... thought that was it, but now it's worse. i'm thinking trany issue IE: gears no longer meshing properly due to lack of teeth. anyone have an exploded view of the trans and a guess as to the cost of replacing gears?

I would recommend going to the Argo dealer and ordering the shop manual for your particular year. It will lead you through the process step by step! I just got done rebuilding my tranny and sunk about $250 in it. All my gears were fine though, it was the output shafts that were bad. I replaced them and all the bearings. All in all it wasnt too bad an experience. i also did the alternator conversion while I had the tranny out and it went alot smoother!

well... i got the trany out and split the case open today... doesn't look too good! some of the upper gears are pretty rough and there were some big chunks in the bottom. i'll throw it in the parts washer at work tomorrow and then tear it all down. the local argo dealer tells me that if the top comes appart it usually drops parts to the bottom and tears up the planetary gears anyone got an argo trany for sale cheap???

I am thinking those top gears are going to run some $$$$$,,I also had to do a output shaft on my 2000 BigFoot,,did all the bearings(9) of them, and seals,,,I recall the parts person saying just one of the upper shafts was $ 300 + change,,luckily my gears were good,,as was the differential. thanks for the info M350. i actually got the trany back together. my local argo dealer had a few boxes of good parts left over from trany rebuilds over the last 25+ years, and was able to get me everything i needed. it's all used, so we'll see how it goes i got it back together tonight and back in the machine... tried to go for a quick test drive and she wouldn't start. fired right up on starting fluid. changed the fuel filter... nothing. pulled the carb off and removed the float bowl to find it bone dry. float needle is working right so i'm thinking that it must be the fuel pump. off to the parts store tomorrow!

i got it fired tonight and did a short test drive. trany seems ok. motor was bogging real bad under load. i'll hit up a mower shop for a fuel pump and carb kit tomorrow. i'm sure i'll need some brake parts once i get it going, so i'm sure i'll be taking you up on that offer

I am new to the 6 x 6 world having bought a used Argo for duck hunting... mine also makes a "popping" sound, but only when I brake left...but there is no grinding, and it doesn't make the sound when I brake right... Am I looking at a transmission problem, or a chain problem?

it's alive!!!

i finally got to drive the beast this morning. i got the trany back together a few weeks ago so i knew it worked, but couldn't get any speed or torque out of the machine. it hardly had enough power to turn. i figured the belt was junk so i ordered a new one. when i got it, the machine was no better. i had also noticed that the brake pads were toast so i ordered some new ones of those... tore the brakes appart, then got thinking the lack of power might be a clutch issue. lubed them up with silicone spray, but couldn't test drive cause of the brakes. well, i got the pads and put the brakes back together last night. this mornings test drive was a success! this old beast is awesome!
it needs new chains, but that just isn't in the budget right now. thanks to everyone who has helped me with this beast
