The negative terminal on the battery is a good ground source.

BUT.....if you have disconnected the battery use the negative cable as a ground, not the battery post.

Is your battery any good? Does it have a bad cell?

Curtis let's try something different, but you might need a bunch of fuses for this. With the stator wires unplugged, and a good fuse in place, hook up the batter and turn the key on. If the fuse blows again, the problem is not in the stator. If the fuse does not blow, plug up the stator wires and see if it blows. If so, the stator is shorting to ground.

If the fuse blows with the stator unplugged, you have a short somewhere else. If there are other electrical components wired into this same circuit (regulator for instance), disconnect them one by one and each time turn the key on and see if the fuse blows. When you get to the point the fuse doesn't blow then you have found the faulty component. If there are no other components on this circuit, you have a bad wire somewhere. if the insulation is nicked and rubbing against metal it will create a short. Remember, all the metal pieces of your machine are grounded so if a wire is touching metal --- short.

Also look for wires that are crushed or pinched, wires that are rubbing against metal parts, wires that look like the insulation has been hot, etc. Keep in mind, if the problem is a wire, just moving the wires around could correct the problem.....temporarily.......until the wire finds it way back to ground.

                    Fuses are cheap.

You might consider a battery jump pack in your on vehicle emergency kit. A small one might not have the power to crank your motor but it will provide you enough juice to spark the motor when you pull start it. I had a older car and was on my way over a Oregon mountain pass when the Alternator went bad. I was able to turn off the headlights (By partially pulling the E Brake) and plugging the Aux battery into 12 volt lighter I had enough juice to keep the motor running and get me back to Eugene.

By "nothing" I guess you mean the fuse didn't blow. That's good. Just to be sure, did you plug up the stator to make sure the fuse blew?

it was with the 2 stator wires and the middle wire witch leads away from the regulator, nothing blew.

so should i take the flywheel off and check the stator?

i tested the stator and its showing its not grounded or shorted.could the regulator be bad?
