  • popped the tire bead

I am new to argos and have a 2001 Bigfoot and while riding on Sunday I popped the outside bead on the front tire. What kind of tire pressure are people running to prevent this. The tires are 25" rawhides. Fortuately i discovered it before breaking the inside bead and was able to put a racket strap around the tire and the portable 12 volt air compressor filled it up (slooooooowly) and reseated the bead and we continued our ride. Thanks for any pressure recommendations. We were riding in rutted trails from 4 wheelers and some rocks on some of the hills. I discovered it because I stopped to remove the trailer hitch because of a sharp drop off and i have had the hitch snag and hang me up before so I got lucky and didn't peel the whole thing off the rim.

Argo's second worse design feature (tranny is #1), is a 9" wheel that rawhides won't stay mounted on without a lot of psi, which ruins the ride and traction. You can find Matt Oxender in the Members List at top of page. He sells replacement wheels for bigfoot/avenger that will cure the problem. You could maybe get by with 2 on the front, they are the most common to dismount.

Believe it or not, I have only lost one bead since I put Slime in my tires last year. I used to lose one almost every time I went riding.

          5 psi

Have a 2006 Avenger, Roger is right. The higher pressures take away from the ride and traction, also makes tires my susceptible to punctures. I will be getting some new rims from Matt O shortly so i can run in the 1.5 to 2.0 range.

Knocked a wheel off the the rim at the CAW ride in April, i really hate that, but thanks to McCoy and some Either instant repair.

Matt O's rims are the solution. I lost several beads on my 2006 Bigfoot on both side front tires. I finally bit the bullet & bought 6 rims from Matt. I have slammed the fronts against rocks, ruts, stumps, etc and have yet to lose a bead. As some of the memebers can tell you, I'm not the most forgiving rider in the world and hit some areas with reckless abandon. They have held up great for me. I agree with Roger and could have probably gotten by with 2 on the front, but I didn't want to take any chances.

Man you guys run some low pressure, I run 6 psi usually just for added clearance and easier turning. The bigfoot seems to bog down with 3 or 4 people in it if i run too low of pressure.
