Herky jerky Scout

First trail ride today on my new Scout...I find the controls rather jerky when turning at low speeds...this was on woods leaf litter with wet soil beneath and on grass as well.
I took off the firewall, floor panels, racks and hood to familiarize myself with the workings of the drive train and of course check fluid levels
And I found one idler chain a bit out of spec (manual says 1/8" of deflection on both chains) and found one to have a lot more than this (about 1/2" plus).
Started the adjustment which is pretty straight forward and brought them both as close to spec as possible then when tightening the main bolt to button it up found that I needed a 5/16" open end (didn't have one) as my adjustable wrench was too fat to grab the bolt head which nestles into its washer.
Anyway, got the wrench and every thing buttoned back up...
My main question is about the herky jerky low speed turns...is this normal on a new machine?
I also imagine there's a learning curve to operate more smoothly as this was my very first time operating it.

I think the biggest thing is the learning curve that you mentioned. I had the same issue when I first drove an Argo but watching some of the members here drive at trail rides, they have an obviously smoother technique. I'm sure it will come to you as you get some more seat time.
