  • 2017 Frontier vs Frontier S - 6x6

Deciding between the Frontier and the Frontier S 6x6.

I'm planning on my 8x8 with a new Frontier 6x6. I am hoping someone can give me some additional insight to help me with deciding between the Base version and the S version.

In comparing the base model to the S model, the key distinctions that seem to matter most are (obviously) the Engine and Transmission. The S version upgrades from the 19hp kohler to the 23hp kohler, and offers the choice of a 2.6 or a 3.3 gear ratio. The S also has the bearing extensions standard. The skid plate can be added to the base model, and the bilge and step aren't necessary options for me.

    Questions:

    1) How is the performance and durability of the 19hp engine. I think this size will do fine for me, considering most of the machines we use on our property are running with similar engines.
    2) Any feedback on these 2 transmission choices?
    3) what is the functionality of the bearing extensions and why are they needed?

    Thanks.

    Hello Greg:
The 19hp Kohler is a plenty powerful motor. Kohler and other companies re-rated hp figures a couple years back. That motor was previously rated at 23 hp so you should have plenty power. Regarding transmissions, it will depend on what conditions you ride in, the loads you carry and whether or not you have tracks. If you are on the heavy load side and thinking about tracks, I prefer the 3.3 gears, but it does limit your speed. The bearing extensions assist your axles in handling the twist and turns of off country travel and support the axles at another point and will ensure longer axle life and another bearing is added in the mix which will extend bearing lifespan as well.

Chose the Frontier S. I am sure I won't regret the upgrade. Thanks for your input.
