  • Front tire chains

At least one dealer I have found online stocks a front tire chain for an Argo.
    Anyone ever used them?
I thought the chains might be a good alternative to tracks (until I can afford some)
Basically using my Argo for ice fishing and riding my own property...no swamps or water for now.

it will never be even close to beating tracks especially with cleats.

I know what you say is true but I was asking if anyone had tried chains...
I will have tracks at some point but I don't think it will be this year.
Chains are $100 and tracks are $3500! (For decent ones)

Chains would only be good with hard packed snow or ice. It will would be preferable to have chains on all tires to prevent chain wind-up. You can always get some 13inch plastic tracks and put some small L-iron cleats or screws on them for added traction.

Thanks, I have thought heavily about the plastic tracks too...

Installing tire chains on only the fronts would, in essence, increase the circumference of the tire. I'm not sure, but it could be a concern with chain wind up..

I've run chains on 6x6s and the Coot never had problems with "wind up" mind you a ladder tire chain is not as consistent as tire tread your only running it over 8 or so times per rotation and even so they tend to roll just a little bit when you do. It be like worrying about wind-up while driving over sticks lol

In fact I find loser chains actually helped wind up on the coot on high traction surfaces. The chains only have to move 1/2" per link to essentially soak up any wind-up in the drive train. Once they are out from under the tires they roll back and the process repeats as the tire revolves.

              -Chains do nothing for flotation
-Chains increase traction on all surfaces but rock
-Vintage small car tire chains can be bought much cheaper and work just as well on AATV tires.
