  • Tracks Ice Cleats

I have an 03 conquest that came with new super tracks. Are ice cleats a big benefit? Also I get some fuel leakage on the mouth of the tank from the gas sloshing around when riding. Is this common? Thanks

The gas cap should seal. There is a vent hose on the filler neck that routes to the rear of the machine. I have been smelling gas for a while, and noticed that hose has broken, or come off the neck, as I can pull on the hose and it's loose.

Argo Super tracks with chains and ice cleats

Ice cleats do help on ice. They pretty much do nothing in snow.

What does work on ice and snow is both ice cleats and chains bolted across the tracks.

Up here in North Idaho, the snow is over 12 feet deep on top of the mountians. We can easily have 4 feet of powder on top of 8 feet of hard pack snow. Right now with everything melting/freezing, we might even have 1 foot of slush on top of deep packed snow.

The chains on the tracks and the ice cleats do help.

Wow! That alot of snow. Another member has chains mounted on his tracks and says the same thing, they work great. I only have ice cleats on my supertracks and to me they only work OK. With the cleats on the outer edge of the tracks they tend to just tilt the tracks instead of digging in and really gripping. I am also going to try the chains for next season. I have been thinking about looping the chains and conecting them on the bottom side of the tracks for better traction for the tracks and for the tires driving them. If you were to go between every other segment that should be plenty of traction I think

          chains on super tracks

My chains are on the outside of the track.

If you decide to do this:

I suggest picking up using the largest washers you can get to fit on BOTH sides of the plastic track. You want to spread the impact of the bolt/chain to as much plastic as you can.

Pick up the smallest (welded link ) chain you can find that looks like it will take the beating. You dont want the chain slapping the body.

When you tighten the bolts, let the links turn (do not hold them straight). You want the chain as tight as you can get it.

You might have to add more air in your tires. Because you have more traction in ice/slush, your tires in the tracks might slip from the ice building up between the tires and tracks. But I bet you know this one....

My supertracks on my 8x8 argo conquest are set up like this:
12 ice cleats on outside edge of tracks
6 ice cleats on inside edge of tracks
          12 chain cross-links

I am considering adding another 12 chains on (both) tracks.

That sure sounds like a good set up. I didn't know you could run cleats on the inside. I thought they would cut into the tub over time from rubing. I am real interested in the chain idea, I think I will do the same setup. I still wonder about my idea of putting the chains on and instead of bolting each side of all the segments just make the chain longer and go between the segments and use a screw link to conect them on the inside of the tracks. that would give you chains on the outside like yours and also on the inside for better grip with the tires. Sorry I am having a hard time explaining my idea on paper. I got it in my head I just can't transfer it to the screen very well
