If you want to check if the O2 sensor is causing you issues try unplugging it and running it without it hooked up. After the engine warms up and runs at steady state for a period the O2 sensor is the primary input to the ECU for adjusting the system when it goes into "optimize mode". Unhooking it won't allow it to go into the optimize mode and if it runs good for much longer than 5 minutes it could give you a good feeling that the 02 sensor may not be working right. I'd also suggest you unhook the battery for a short bit (5 minutes probably would do it). This clears any stored memory in the ECU and returns everything to the original factory settings. The ECU's have an "adaptive" memory so it runs . I have been told that putting fuel system cleaners in the gas can cause the O2 sensors to act funny.
It sounds like your doing the right thing with changing the fuel filter. The tube with the screen in it is likely the pick up tube inside the tank. You have to drill out the rivets and pull the plastic pan under the seat out to get to it. If you have a bunch of trash in the tank it can plug off and starve the fuel pump. If memory serves me correct fuel pressure should be around 38 psi +/-2 if you want to check that.
When you change out the plugs take a bit and check the connections to the coils. I've been told that these can come loose and cause spark issues on an intermittent basis.
If you google "Argo Manuals" you can likely find the Kohler engine manual.
