I broke through the ice on the river for the first time this past winter. What I didn’t count on was that the ice broke and dropped one side into the water. It was all I could do to keep from flipping over as the Argo slid sideways of the ice into the water. Fortunately I hit the bilge pump very quickly and kept my composure until we settled down in the water. I really believe that we would have flipped had I had a passenger at the time. I have an Argo 8 x 8 Frontier scout with tracks. I also had a hell of a time getting that Argo out of the water because there was a space of about 4 inches between the layer of ice and the surface of the water in that river.

I used my winch and a 27’ tow strap. Was fortunate enough to be able to get the strap high up (12’)in a tree. This was necessary to lift my front end up and then use the winch to get back on the ice. Very very fortunate that I had a tree that I could get to.

You can also use a log for an angled up pull if you are too far from a tree. chainsaw a small hole in the ice about 30' away from your argo and wrap your winch cable around a short 2x4 or strudy branch to use as a toggle and push it through the hole to anchor it under the ice. Then stand a 5' tall log up under the winch line closer to the hole your argo is floating in. You'll need a 2nd set of hand to hold the 5' log stable while you tension the line.
