I have a 16 hp Tecumseh engine burning oil. I am using 10/30 oil so I could I use a heavier oil or is there something I could add to the oil?

Did you do the leak down test yet? I have one that smokes with worn valve stems.sigpic
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
Joe Camel never does that.
Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

I am huge fan of Lucas
Have used it many times in different engines but the most impressive was in my 1965 Starcraft Chieftian 120hp eninge.
Used to burn about a liter every trip out. Put a liter of Lucas in and now do not add any extra oil for an entire season of boating.See my photos here.

I think its a 1L to 4L of oil ratio.
As long as you keep to the ratio suggested on the bottle it will work out.
Dump the remaining product into your car.See my photos here.

Back to your oringal question I don't think anything shy of gear lube will fix your problem if it is smoking and what not your motor will probably have less power unless it may be valve guide seal which I do not think is the issue. I think harbor freight will mail you the leak down tool for like 39 dollars . But if you choose not to do it is your choice.

Being from down under (you) I'm not into the litre thing, how many ounces is that about 8? If so you have internal issues, did you try a compression check since you didn't do the leak down test?
Just FYI, you can probably find a new piston and ring set and head gasket, but valves are long gone unless you find someone up there with some on the shelf.sigpic

Well dang, must be time for a new engine if it's burning a qt. in 15 or so miles. There are a few threads on here about Tec. swap outs.
Mine was smoking so bad I decided to try to find valves, may have a good used set but since there are 2 sizes of each valve I know I need a disassembly before any further progress.sigpic
