I have to use Synthetic Oil as the regular 80W90 gear oil is too thick in winter. Shifting gears was really hard when it's cold. Look for an oil that has a lower Brookfield Viscosity at -40. I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 and the gears shift just fine in the cold. Since some transmission components are splash lubricated I imagine they get more oil with the synthetic
