  • Vanguard II Questions

Howdy folks, Paul here. Wanted an AATV since I was 10 and recently acquired a 1995 Argo Vanguard II. Everything currently works as it should, and I plan to try and keep it that way. My main hobby is rebuilding old tractors, so I am comfortable with wrenches. Will have questions and am hoping you'll weigh in with answers for me.

I've been reading everything I can find, but am still hazy in some areas. First off, I'm not seeing anything on the difference between the three geared transmission options. Mine is the HU. I've seen comments that it isn't good in mud and that I should never use high range with the tracks on. Yes or no? What can you tell me as to the pros and cons/dos and don'ts of this trans?

Hi John! We've still got a couple feet of crusty snow in the fields. Rides nicely over top unless you stop or turn. Then it breaks through and you see how deep it is. Doesn't faze it. Might be different with wet heavy stuff. Only time will tell.

Well Paul, there is really no difference between the 3 transmissions except the ratios, those transmissions are find in mud once you figure out how to drive an Argo as there is a science to those transmissions. As far as tracks low range will simply have more power and promote belt life, if it will turn in high you are golden if not you'll understand why it is recommended.

The biggest don't is don't ride the brakes as they will heat up and boil the fluid in the calipers and the sticks will land in your lap.

After 18 years in my 2000 I think many members on here will tell you it is quite capable, I run high almost all the time but will not win any races up hill, down hill is another story.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

          Excellent reply, thanks!

For those not in the know the biggest differences between a Bigfoot and A Vanguard2 are
            25 inch tires
            Bearing extensions
            Skid Plate
            18hp over 16hp
            Brake fan
50-2 initial drive chains and jackshaft sprocket vs 40-2

The early, single colored, V2 shared the older and shorter wheel base. Later black bottomed machines shared the same frame as Bigfoot and Conquest 6x6.

The early Bigfoots came with the H trans also

Hmm... Weird that it flipped one of my photos upside down. Was right earlier.

Anyway, is the body itself smaller on mine, than the later versions, or is it just that the axles are shorter?

Got me curious about bearing extensions. Will have to look that up, as I'm not sure how it would work. Mine has the hub extensions for the wider tracks.

Wheelbase is shorter, body is molded different but same overall. Don't think extensions are an option with that frame, but could be wrong.

                    Hey Ken!
Glad I was able to be a little help. Kind of funny that we bought identical machines and paid the same price. Too bad we live so far apart.
