  • 2018 Fronteir Idler Chains

    Hello all,

I recently just purchased a new 2018 frontier. It doesn’t even have an hour of operation yet and when I turn, there is a clicking noise coming from front right side. If I’m reading my manual right, it seems the idler chains may need to be tightened. . Is this Normal on newer machines? Also, should the main sprockets on the idler shafts have a little bit of slide room back and forth? I am new to my machine and I’m a STICKER for keeping it in top shape and making sure all my internals are properly adjusted and lubricated. Any encouragement and help to keep me at ease is greatly appreciated!

If your dealer prep. was done you should be ok on the idler chains for a few hours but they will stretch quite a bit when new, all chains do this, no worries there, just keep an eye on them. The clicking your hearing would be the drive chains loading and unloading when you are turning. Keep in mind these will stretch a lot too and you will hear and feel them slap the floor pans as well from time to time when they get loose. The automatic chain adjusters work but the chains need to be pretty loose to ratchet, you can help them by lifting up the tensioners . The sprockets need to be able to drift a little no worries there either. Welcome to the Forum Kcampbell1993. Lots of helpful people out here, ask away. I don't where your from but be very careful around the water until you learn the way it acts.

Beagle Man, thank you for the help and info! I appreciate it greatly. I’m located in south Louisiana. I’ll be running 18 inch super tracks in mostly shallow water freshwater marsh. That’s what i bought it for. I’m extremely pleased with it, just wanna be sure to know all the odds and ends to keep it in tip top shape and ready to roll shape.

2016 Frontier here...had to adjust my idler chains 3 times in the first 20 hours. They seemed to have normalized and stopped stretching since the 20 hour service. Kind of a pain the way they have the idler chain adjustment bolts (the big ones you have to loosen) before the actual adjustment, in that they have this huge rectangular washers that make it hard to get a wrench purchase on the nut. I keep thinking I’m doing something wrong each time I adjust them as it just seems to be more difficult than it should be. Oh well...

I've found that laying horizontally across the seat helps me to get the grip and angle I need on the 15/16ths bolts. The first few times was awkward and tiring. About the sixth time I did it, it became easier and easier. Now, its nothing to do.

Yes...definitely not the easiest machines to work on when you’re pushing 70!

What will you be using to get you through the water that is deeper than your machine?
