  • tips to remove driven (secondary, transmission) clutch on 2001 big foot

I've sucked the oil out of my big foot and went to change the filter and as the manual says remove the driven clutch for better access to filter and drain plug in 18 hp B&S.

The manual makes it sound easy - remove bolt and slip clutch from shaft. Not happening. I've tried some mild prying but am afraid of bending clutch or shaft. I've searched the site and found one reference to drilling holes in the stationary part of the clutch, tapping and using a puller. I was hoping to find another way. Any ideas?

I promised on my previous thread to post pictures of my home made suction set up but I need to borrow my wife's phone or camera as I don't have either. I will see if I can get to that later.

I hope some one has ideas about the clutch removal.

Taking clutch off to access oil filter or drain plugs on 18h B&S doesn't sound right. Not sure how your machine is set up with motor to trans. When i did have to remove that clutch, it was frozen just from being on there so long. Spray PB on it, give it some time to seep in(aka beer break)...hope this helps

I've taken the beer brake and had a good nights sleep to boot! I'm not familiar with 'PB' - all I can think of is peanut butter (PB) and I'll bet it won't work
Thanks for the reply, I;ll give it a try tonight with the good old fashioned WD40 (and some PB if you wish to educate me).

had a bigfoot for 17 years. you do not need to take off the clutch to remove the oil filter. If it is stubborn you can use the right size channel locks and remove the oil filter.
You may have to crush the filter a bit but it will come off.

Well I like a productive evening! I decided to persevere and get the driven clutch off. I went and got some of the PB buster and put it on before supper and used some 'love taps' to remove it later. You can bet I'll use lots of anti seize when it goes back together. It sure did make the filter easier to get to. I still managed to drop the old filter into the bottom of the tub - glad I had some rags in there.

Tomorrow I hope to get to the bearing store and buy some 60 single and some double 50 chain to install this weekend. I also really need to wash out the crud from the tub.

Any recommendations about chain lube as in personal favorites and application techniques?

Thanks again for the help with the clutch removal and the advise about the filter.

DuPont Chain-Saver works pretty good...it's wax based, easy to clean and re-apply. Really haven't seen any dirt / sand stick to it yet

Thanks Snackmaster, I'll look for some chain lube with the wax base. Have you cleaned out the bottom with diesel fuel as a first rinse to get the really heavy stuff and used detergent or engine shampoo to get rid of the diesel and any residues?

White lithium grease also works goods. You can get it in a spray can just about anywhere

White lithium grease - is that what's also recommended for the secondary clutch lub?
